The mascot of Pokemon Violet, Miraidon has been an omnipresent threat in the VGC scene ever since it was legal. Base 135 Special Attack and Speed, Electric/Dragon dual typing, and an ability that sets up Electric Terrain and gives it a damage boost — all of these make Miraidon a Pokemon to fear.

How To Deal With Miraidon in VGC
While Calyrex Shadow Rider has higher Special Attack and Speed, Miraidon gets a massive damage boost to its Electric moves that gives it on-par offensive capabilities. Its ability Hadron Engine gives it a 1.33x damage boost in Electric Terrain, which it also sets up. Add in the Terrain and STAB boosts, and the Electric moves from Miraidon hit like Thor’s hammer.
However, unlike Calyrex Shadow Rider, its defenses are not hampered by its offensive potential. Miraidon has 100/100/115 defenses, which do not make it very bulky for a Restricted Legendary compared to something like Calyrex Ice Rider or Lunala. But it gives it enough bulk so that it can shrug off a few hits and use a Choice Specs for another damage boost.
Best Pokemon to Counter Miraidon in VGC
Realistically speaking, there aren’t any Pokemon in the meta that hard counter Miraidon and perform other vital roles to justify putting them on your team. However, there are certain Pokemon that can check Miraidon in different ways in VGC:
- Calyrex Ice Rider: If Calyrex Ice Rider can set up Trick Room, it will nullify Miraidon’s Speed and take away one of its greatest advantages.
- Rillaboom: As a Grass type, Rillaboom resists Miraidon’s Electric-type moves, but its main role is setting up Grassy Terrain, replacing Electric Terrain in the process. This will drastically lower Miraidon’s offensive capabilities.
- Chien-Pao: Chien-Pao ties with Miraidon in Speed and can use Ice Spinner to remove Electric Terrain while also dealing super-effective Ice STAB damage.
- Iron Hands: Opposing Iron Hands can take advantage of Miraidon’s Electric Terrain to give themselves a boost.
