In this guide we will look at the best Pokemon VGC cores that are bound to see a lot of success at Worlds 2025.

In Pokemon VGC, you send two Pokemon on the field at the same time. As such, your team tends to be built around how well these two Pokemon, i.e., cores, work well together when they are on the field.
This article will focus on the Pokemon that form great VGC cores well-suited for Worlds 2025. Additionally, the Pokemon we are considering are all Restricted Legendaries. This is because you can only have two of these on a single team. So you should have two that work really well together.
Top 5 Pokemon VGC Cores for Worlds 2025
These duos work well together in VGC and will definitely see top placements at Worlds 2025:
- Zacian and Kyogre
- Koraidon and Lunala
- Calyrex Ice Rider and Miraidon
- Miraidon and Lunala
- Calyrex Shadow Rider and Zamazenta
5) Zacian and Kyogre

Commonly nicknamed as ‘SwordFish’, the duo of Zacian and Kyogre has been weakened a little this generation. This is because Zacian Crowned’s ability Intrepid Sword now only gives a one-time Attack boost as opposed to each time it switches in. However, Zacian remains strong, and its synergy with Kyogre still works.
Zacian takes on the Pokemon that Kyogre struggles with, like Raging Bolt, Rillaboom, and Ogerpon Wellspring. Meanwhile, Kyogre can handle Fire-types like Incineroar, Volcarona, and Chi-Yu, which Zacian Crowned struggles with.
4) Koraidon and Lunala

Koraidon and Lunala form a core that can attack with Fighting and Ghost STAB, which is one of the best combinations in Pokemon. The mascot of Pokemon Scarlet is a fast attacker, whose Fighting STAB deals massive damage. Meanwhile, Lunala is the best Restricted Pokemon when it comes to support, protecting Koraidon from spread moves with Wide Guard.
3) Calyrex Ice Rider and Miraidon

Calyrex Ice Rider and Miraidon together provide a deadly “BoltBeam” combo. This combination is named after the moves Thunderbolt and Ice Beam, which hit most Pokemon for neutral damage.
What holds this core back a bit is the massive difference in Speed, with Miraidon being extremely fast and Calyrex Ice Rider being quite slow. However, skilled players can still find a way to use these two together. For instance, Miraidon can pivot out with Volt Switch as Calyrex sets up Trick Room for itself.
2) Miraidon and Lunala

Miraidon and Lunala started off as a dark horse VGC core. But these two Pokemon have slowly become one of the most dominant duos in the meta. Lunala’s most commonly held item right now is the Electric Seed. This is a one-time consumable item that activates in Electric Terrain and gives the holder a defense boost. And Miraidon is the only viable Electric Terrain setter in the format thanks to its ability, Hadron Engine.
The plan with these two is fairly straightforward. Miraidon attacks with its Electric STAB, like Electro Drift, which deals massive damage to even neutral targets thanks to its ability Hadron Engine. Lunala supports it with Wide Guard for spread move protection and its STAB Moongeist Beam for damage.
1) Calyrex Shadow Rider and Zamazenta

Arguably the best core in VGC right now, Calyrex Shadow Rider and Crowned Zamazenta also utilize a Ghost/Fighting STAB combo. However, while Koraidon and Lunala were more of a balanced core, these two are fast and relatively bulky for how speedy they are.
Crowned Zamazenta takes on the Dark-types, giving Calyrex Shadow Rider trouble with ease. Meanwhile, Calyrex uses Psychic to take on Pokemon like Amoonguss and Koraidon that Zamazenta struggles against.
