Almost 8 years after its release, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) has maintained its popularity into 2025. The game sees no signs of slowing down as it is continuously pumping out content. Additionally, the developers are also reinventing the game with new game modes, collaborations, crossovers, and more.

Despite continuous innovations, the game managed to keep its identity as a Battle Royale game. It also managed to carve its own aesthetic away from other games of the same genre, like Fortnite. The game sticks to its gritty, military-inspired realism, offering a grounded experience that appeals to players who prefer strategic gameplay over arcade-style mechanics.

Here are five key reasons why PUBG Battlegrounds remains popular in 2025.

5 Reasons PUBG Battlegrounds Remains Relevant in 2025

1. Consistent Content Updates

PUBG Battlegrounds is considered the grandfather of the Battle Royale genre. Despite being eight years old, the game continues to pump out fresh content regularly. The game has also embraced collaborations and crossovers with various forms of media.

It has partnered with popular franchises from movies, TV shows, anime, and even other video games. These collaborations are more than just cosmetics too. A good example is the Metro Exodus collaboration with PUBG Mobile back in 2020 where they added new maps, weapons, and monsters.

For a more recent event, the game collaborated with the popular anime Spy x Family back in May 2024. The event allows players to unlock certain outfit sets based on the anime series along with other accessories. Needless to say, this won’t be the last of the major collaborations. We can expect more surprising crossovers in the future.

2. Transparent Roadmaps and Future Plans

PUBG’s development team has laid clear plans for the game’s future, fostering player confidence and anticipation. The 2024 roadmap showed a lot of upcoming content and features from new events, collaborations, and even a plan to improve their cheat detection system. While the game remains in a constant battle against players who use exploits to gain an unfair advantage, the developers have been able to curb them, as evidenced by their Weekly Bans Notice posts.

In a more recent post, updates regarding the transition to Unreal Engine 5 and the introduction of user-generated content (UGC) are set to begin in late 2025. This is promising, considering how creative gaming communities can be, as proven by games like Fortnite. Needless to say, PUBG Battlegrounds is not content on being just the godfather of Battle Royale. There is still more to come that players can look forward to.

3.  Robust Player Engagement

While the live service gaming market has become oversaturated, PUBG Battlegrounds continues to maintain a strong player base year after year. While it no longer reaches its peak of 3 million concurrent players from 2018, it has stabilized at around 700,000 daily active players. This consistent player engagement indicates a loyal community that continues to find the game enjoyable and worth returning to.

4. Community Engagement

The official PUBG Battlegrounds Reddit community remains active and thriving. Players regularly share their experiences, gameplay clips, and discussions about the game on this platform. The community is also welcoming to new players. If you are new to the game or looking for friends, you only need to introduce yourself, and you might find like-minded people you can play with. Additionally, the developers also engage with the community by posting detailed patch notes and keeping players informed about new updates, balance changes, and upcoming content.

However, like most gaming communities, the subreddit isn’t without its share of player complaints. It’s unrealistic to expect developers to address every issue immediately. Ongoing feedback does provide valuable insights that can help shape future improvements. We can only hope that the developers are indeed listening to the community and get these issues fixed in due time.

5. Expansion of the PUBG Universe

PUBG Battlegrounds is no longer just one genre. Its expansion with new titles and genres keeps the franchise dynamic and appealing. Upcoming games like “PUBG: Black Budget,” a PC extraction shooter, “PUBG: Blindspot,” a top-down tactical shooter, and “PUBG: Valor,” a new console battle royale, are in development, offering diverse experiences within the game’s ecosystem.

The developers remain tight-lipped about these upcoming titles. However, this suggests that the grandfather of Battle Royale is looking to expand its horizons. The main goal is most likely to attract a broader audience while keeping existing players engaged.
