In the world of storytelling, the ability to revisit and re-imagine key moments is a powerful tool. South of Midnight, a captivating narrative set against a backdrop of mystery and intrigue, leverages this concept by offering its readers “Replay Chapters.” These chapters provide a unique opportunity to explore pivotal scenes and also a second chance to find any collectibles you missed the first time around. In this guide, we’ll cover how you can replay chapters and what progress is lost in South of Midnight.

How to Replay Chapters in South of Midnight

You can replay any chapter in South of Midnight at any time by selecting ‘Load Game’ from the Main Menu. This will bring you to a screen that displays three possible game slots. Choose the ongoing game you wish to use, and at the bottom of the image should be a button select to ‘Replay Chapters’. On PC the default key for this is ‘R’.

Press this button and you’ll pull up at list of all the chapters you’ve completed so far. As you scroll down the list, look over on the right and you can see a count of how many floofs you have found, out of how many are there to find. Additionally, it will also tell you if you have found the health filament, too. The number of readables is also listed. Unfortunately the game does not tell you at a quick glance exactly how many you have found. In order to see specifically which readables you need to discover, you’ll have to enter the chapter and look at the full list of readables inside.

Next, when you select a chapter to replay, the game will throw up a confirmation pop-up screen that can make you balk. It will state that replaying a chapter will erase your previous progress. This can seem to imply that it will wipe all of the collectibles you’ve found. Moreover, you may fear that it will also clear later chapters and game progress completely.

However, this is thankfully not the case. All the collectibles that you found while originally playing the chapter will still remain ‘collected’. Floofs you’ve found previously will not be seen at all. Readables are still there in the environment, but ones you’ve already found are still credited on your menu list.

Additionally, starting over at Chapter 2 will not erase any progress you’ve made in Chapters 3, 4, or even 10. Obviously, you won’t be able to use abilities you unlocked in later chapters. For example, you won’t ever have the Glide ability in Chapter 2. Moreover, when you replay a chapter, you won’t get any abilities from that chapter until you play through the original point they are granted to you.
