A biphasic schedule is a strategy in RimWorld where you divide the sleep cycle of your colony into two periods of 24 hours. This keeps your colonists from dropping below 50%-60% rest percentage. With a more stable sleep schedule, your colonists will not be drowsy while at work. This is essential, especially during unpredictable raids.

With that said, it’s not an easy strategy to pull off. It requires a lot of micromanagement. Based on your setup, it might even cause travel lag if you place beds too close to each other. With that said, here is a guide on how the biphasic schedule works in RimWorld and how you can use it to your advantage.

Similar to the real-world term, a biphasic schedule in RimWorld is where you divide colony rests into two shorter sleep sessions instead of one long block. This method is used to keep your colonists well rested. With frequent sleep, there should be little to no low-energy moments. One of the biggest reasons you should use a biphasic schedule is to keep your colony ready at all times. They are less likely to be caught groggy during nighttime raids, improving defensive response times.

How To Set a Biphasic Schedule in RimWorld

The sleep periods for the biphasic schedule will vary based on your preference. However, the premise remains the same. Here is a step-by-step guide on how you can do it:

  • Head to the Schedules tab.
  • Set up two sleep blocks for your colonies. It can be 00:00–03:00 and 12:00–15:00 or whichever you prefer.
  • Set the remaining hours to “Anything” so colonists will resume work until their next sleep session.

Tips and Tricks

Knowing how your colonists behave can help with managing the biphasic schedule. It’s going to require a lot of micromanagement. This means there is a possibility of travel issues where they block paths and make it less efficient. With that said, try and place beds close to work zones or pre-stage meals nearby for remote workers. While you’re at it, make sure there is enough space for your colonists to pathfind their way to various areas. This prevents them from blocking other workers.

Pros and Cons

The biphasic schedule strategy in RimWorld is not perfect. It still has some issues that you need to keep in mind. But if you can master the micromanaging part, you should be fine.
