Roadcraft puts you in control of different vehicles and expects you to master each of them. Mastery is necessary, too, if you wish to trudge through the varied terrains easily. Since the vehicles are the main source of gameplay in Roadcraft, they have a lot of intricate mechanics and perks to add complexity to the gameplay.

The complexity in the driving gameplay first bares its fangs during the opening of the game. Within 10 minutes of starting out, you run into a flooded area, and the game then introduces you to three different vehicle functions: Low Gear, AWD, and Diff Lock.

Low Gear helps curb unnecessary wheel spin, granting you a greater degree of control over your vehicle. AWD (All-Wheel Drive) grants you a greater degree of control by distributing torque across all wheels of your vehicle. This means the engine distributes the work of pushing to all wheels in equal measure, improving stability.

The final mode of control is the Diff Lock (Differential Lock). The game states that the Diff Lock prevents wheels from slipping, but does not explain beyond that. How does the Diff Lock work? What does it do? If you’re struggling to understand the Diff Lock function in Roadcraft, this guide will go over how it works in the game.

To understand how the Diff Lock works, you need to know the fundamentals of a vehicle. The wheels of any vehicle work on different axles. They work at different speeds so as to improve movement when turning corners. When you turn a corner, the outer wheels have to travel a greater distance, and therefore, move at different speeds. While this is great for turning corners on man-made roads, it’s not so much on off-road, harsh terrains.

The Diff Lock comes in to fix this issue. The Diff Lock in Roadcraft tunes both wheel speeds to be the same. This allows the wheels to work in sync, which improves the traction of the vehicle on slippery surfaces. This function is perfect for off-road terrains.
