99 Nights in the Forest is making waves on Roblox recently and has emerged as one of the most popular survival games on the platform. While there is a wendigo-esque paranormal feel to the game, the game has parallels with a real-life incident from 2023 dubbed Operation Hope. The game acknowledges this with a prompt the first time you launch it, noting how the game is inspired by real-life events, with details changed.

Let us explore the connections between Operation Hope’s real-life story and the 99 Nights in the Forest Roblox experience.

The 2023 Colombia Amazon child rescue operation, called Operation Hope by the media, has direct parallels with the Roblox game. As per a CNN report from June 2023, four children were rescued from the Amazon forest in Colombia almost 40 days after their plane crashed on May 1, 2023. The crash killed all of the adults on board, leaving the four children (who were siblings) to fend for themselves for more than a month.

The four children in the forest were aged 4, 9, 13, and 11 months old. The news that all of them survived went viral around the world, with many commending the eldest kid. While the four were malnourished and had insect bites, none of them were severely injured or ill. The kids were part of an indigenous community living near the forest. The media credited the children’s innate survival knowledge for allowing them to survive in the forest.

Now, let us discuss the parallels with the game. The primary goal in 99 Nights in the Forest is to rescue four children scattered around the forest and survive for 99 nights. The same number of children, and the objective of surviving in the forest for a set number of days, are analogous to the 2023 Colombia Amazon child rescue operation. In the game, it is you and your friends who rescue the children.

Rescuing the children adds multipliers to your day counter. This helps you progress the game quickly. The children will set up tents near your camp after you rescue them.

That said, 99 Nights in the Forest has supernatural elements. The Deer, inspired by the Wendigo, is the main antagonist of the game. For those who are unaware, the Wendigo is an indigenous myth from North America about an evil spirit that stalks the forests at night. The Deer in the game is afraid of fire, like the folklore. The only recourse is to get to the safety of your camp. As of the latest update, the game also has aliens.

All in all, 99 Nights in the Forest takes inspiration from the real-life Amazon rescue operation and blends supernatural elements into a very compelling game. Since its release in April 2025, it has garnered over 1.4 billion views on Roblox.
