Here’s how to complete one of the most challenging endgame quests in Runescape Dragonwilds: Dragon Slayer.
RuneScape Dragonwilds is the new survival crafting obsession in the PC gaming landscape. The title is currently in 4th place on the Steam top sellers chart, just behind Counter-Strike 2 and Schedule 1. The survival game can be played solo or in co-op with up to four players. The game is a brand new take on the Runescape franchise and similar to games like Rust and Valheim. The part where the game deviates from those mentioned earlier is that the world isn’t procedurally generated.
The main quest of the Dragon Slayer doesn’t feature any quest markers but instead a general area to explore. This guide will reveal all the secret information the game doesn’t tell you about the quest. This will include locations for quest items, where to go, and key places to progress the quest. This is how you can trigger the main quest of Runescape Dragonwilds. Let’s get into it.
How To Start Dragon Slayer Quest in Runescape Dragonwilds
You need to travel to Bramblemead Valley and look for a ruined tower-esque structure. You’ll see a wise old man who will give a summary of the quest. He’ll tell you that a giant dragon named Velgar is harming the locals the moment they set foot in the valley. The first course of action you need to take to achieve your objective is to build a base.
This place serves as a perfect base of operations, as the area doesn’t have high-tier enemy raids. You’ll find this location highly accessible once you unlock teleport. The only nuisance are pesky goblins, which don’t pose much of a threat. This area will serve as a perfect base due to its sense of security and accessibility.
The next step is to craft some utilities like crafting benches, a cooking pot because you need to hunt a deer with a bow. You need to craft the Spinning wheel and thread. The next step is to get the old man some antlers, so he can cast a tracking spell. You can hunt deer that are seen all around Bramblemead Valley and Temple Woods.
Deliver the antlers to the old man and he’ll tell you to find an NPC named Cathan. Cathan is an adventurer who was part of the expedition and decided to fight Velgar alone. To begin this part of the quest, you must go to the middle portion of Bramblemead Valley. You’ll also need to fight a few Goblin Bruisers, Archers and Warriors.
Ascend to the top of the castle and look for an object. It’s a blue glowing book which contains a message: “The Air Seems Gloom With Dread. Velgar descends upon the Fortress.” The dragon will then land on the fortress, and you’ll need to run to save yourself.
How To Find the Swamp Vault and Cathan’s Trail in Runescape Dragonwilds
After you survive the Dragon’s attack, the quest marker will point to north. You should now return to base, resupply, and prepare to reach the Whispering Swamp to progress. You should head to Dragonkin Vault: a glowing blue door, which basically has a dungeon inside.
Travel to the swamp, you’ll need to fight some goblin archers and Giants Rotten Rats that are poisonous. Players can craft the Antipoison Potion and the Fortifying Crunchies using the mats available in the swamp. You need to prepare for a tough fight to progress. Vault Guardians, Sentinels and an Archon will make their presence known as opposition.. You’ll need to avoid the traps present while going through hallways to a hidden room on the northeastern side. You’ll find a dying goblin there. Speak to him to follow Cathan’s path.
How To Find Cathan in Runescape Dragonwilds
You’ll find out that Cathan tricked the goblins and massacred them. Cathan is now headed for the Fractured Plains, looking for a place named Gornfell. You should return to base to resupply and craft tier 2 equipment. Prepare a bunch of potions and materials for a Lodestone to teleport (in case you die and need to pick up your precious loot).
Players need to access the Whispering Swamp through the western section to go across it. Once players arrive at the area, they should look for a convenient spot to place their Lodestone so they can teleport later. Following the trail of goblins, players will face Wolves and Garou enemies known as Bulky, which are pretty tough.
The spot where players need to search the obelisk is in the middle of the Fractured Plains. Travel there while fighting Garou, Terror Birds, Wolves and Dire Wolves in the area. You’ll find Cathan across the bridge that leads to the Obelisk. To access it, players will have to fight a Garou Thane. This enemy has an enormous shield that absorbs damage. So you need to break his guard to cause damage. Once you have defeated him, you can go ahead and speak with Cathan’s Ghost at the foot of the Obelisk.
After defeating Garou Thane you’ll get the recipe for Thane’s Authority, which is the most powerful battle axe in the game. Once you have defeated Thane, you can speak with Cathan’s Ghost at the foot of the Obelisk. You’ll find him across the tower.
How To Summon and Beat Velgar in Runescape Dragonwilds
You’ll need to craft the Challenge Horn as we mentioned in our previous guide. Once you’ve done this, travel to Velgar’s High (The Obelisk in the Middle of the Fractured Plains). Go through the big door to reach the top and place the horn on the nearby pedestal. Then select the first option to call Velgar and begin the battle.
Vulgar has three types of attacks that you should be aware of:
- Poison Breath: Vulgar uses his poison breath to cause damage and poison the players. They can be buffed by the effects of Antipoison Potion and Anti-position food to minimise damage and avoid the damage-over-time effect.
- Ground Slam/ Spikes: Velgar slams the ground in front of it with its claw, crushing players who are not using Wind Shield and stunning them. Then spikes emerge from the ground and hurt the nearest players twice to slow them down. In each phase, Velgar takes flight and returns. Moreover, the spikes grow in number.
- Poison Meteors: Velgar starts to fly and summons poison meteors from the sky. You need to dodge them and the puddles they create to avoid deadly damage.
Dragon Slayer Quest Rewards
Once players defeat this dragon, they should return to the Wise Old Man to collect the rewards. These include: The Tome of the Dragonslayer, which grants 500 exp for Ranged, Magic and attacks. Additional rewards include the Dragonblight shield blueprint, which can be crafted using the Anti Dragon shield and Dragon Visage. You should collect Velgar’s head and deliver it to the Wise Old Man. Doing this completes one of the major endgame challenges of Runescape Dragonwilds.
