Everything you need to know about the solo experience in Elden Ring Nightreign, and whether it’s worth engaging with after the latest update.

Elden Ring Nightreign is built with co-op in mind, despite featuring a dedicated single-player mode. The game’s difficulty, as well as boss encounters, is balanced around three players. While the base Elden Ring did feature a co-op multiplayer mode, it wasn’t as fleshed out as Nightreign’s. Co-op in FromSoftware’s “Souls” games has always been a “tacked-on” feature—something most players tend to overlook in favor of the single-player experience.
While there is still some fun to be had in Souls co-op, it was always more of an optional feature. However, that’s not the case for Nightreign. In FromSoftware’s latest title, co-op multiplayer is the primary focus.
That said, Nightreign also features a solo mode, which recently received major balance-related changes with the latest update. But is solo mode really viable in Elden Ring Nightreign, or is it best played in co-op? Let’s find out.
How Does the Solo Mode Work in Elden Ring Nightreign?

Elden Ring Nightreign’s solo mode functions similarly to previous FromSoftware games. However, there are a few key differences. Due to the game’s progression system, completing Expeditions in single-player takes significantly longer than doing so in co-op. Additionally, single-player mode in Nightreign is much more challenging because bosses and enemy encounters are tuned for multiplayer. Often, you will be attacked by multiple enemies or even multiple bosses, which can be incredibly overwhelming when playing solo. That said, FromSoftware introduced a few balance-related changes to the solo mode.
First, enemies and bosses have lower HP in single-player mode. Additionally, the aggression of bosses is reduced, especially for those that feature extra enemies during the encounter. For example, in the Tricephalos Expedition, the Nightlord Gladius can split into three entities. This is manageable in three-player co-op but can be a nightmare in single-player. However, the boss’s aggression is lowered in solo mode, where it tends to attack only occasionally after splitting into three. In addition, the latest update for Nightreign also increased the Rune payout for solo mode.
Is Elden Ring Nightreign Worth Playing in Single-Player (Solo)?

Elden Ring Nightreign’s solo mode is definitely worth playing, but only after you’ve spent a good amount of time in multiplayer. Once you’ve fully mastered at least one of the Nightfarers and acquired a few Relic loadouts, you can head into the Expeditions to try and clear them solo. Even after the latest balance patch, solo mode in Nightreign still feels like a “tacked-on” addition. The game is mostly balanced around co-op and is not nearly as fun or rewarding in single-player. That said, solo mode remains the best option for completing the Remembrance quests.
Outside of challenge runs and Remembrance quests, it’s best to stick with the co-op mode for Elden Ring Nightreign.
Additional Notes
As of the writing of this article, Nightreign only features a three-player co-op and a solo mode. However, FromSoftware has confirmed that a two-player co-op mode is currently in development. The two-player co-op mode will be added to the game in an upcoming title update. More details on the mode will be shared closer to its release later this year.
