The Key to the Back Mountains is a story item you cannot avoid if you wish to move ahead in Chapter 6, Shell of the Past. At Ebisugaoka Middle School, gates block access to the mountain path, and this key is the one thing that opens them. Without it, Hinako and her companions remain trapped inside the school grounds.

In this article, we will explore how to get the Key to the Back Mountains.

The key is locked inside a cabinet on the first floor, and it’s not easy to reach this. You need to gather multiple keys and work through a sequence of puzzles.

First, you have to access the second floor. Both staircases are shut, and clues direct you to the garden where the vice principal’s missing key lies hidden among blue chrysanthemums. The courtyard is dangerous, with a towering blade-wielding figure and smaller enemies waiting. You can either sneak through or face them head-on before picking up the stairwell key.

Solve the Puzzles of the Second Floor

On the second floor, you encounter a puzzle box with three levels. Each stage asks for specific symbol groupings: fruit icons first, then journals, and finally cherry blossoms. Completing these opens the way to another classroom, where you find the Old Annex Main Gate Key on the teacher’s podium.

This annex holds the most demanding challenge: the locker puzzle system. The school’s students created a cipher where numbers replace letters by visual similarity. For example, A = 4, I = 1, S = 5, B = 8. You must apply this method to crack open lockers.

The critical one belongs to Asakura Ayumi. Depending on your difficulty setting, the combination changes:

  • Story Mode: SEA = 534
  • Hard Mode: BUS = 865
  • Lost in the Fog: EGG = 399

Other lockers offer optional items. Aoi Takeshi’s locker code is 401 (AOI) and holds an origami clue. Tsuchiya Taiko’s code is 377 (TT), rewarding you with a Wolf Omamori for stronger attacks. Suga Yosie’s code is 505 (SOS) and has a school bag that increases your inventory space.

Once you have opened Ayumi’s locker, you will get the Key Cabinet Key. With it, you return to the first floor, open the cabinet, and finally collect the Key to the Back Mountains.

How To Use the Key To the Back Mountains

With the key secured, your next move is back to the chained gates of the school grounds. Use it to open the barrier that blocks the Ebisugaoka Mountain Path. This is not just about escaping the school; it is about pushing the story forward. Hinako, Shu, and Rinko need that gate open to reach the mountains where the next phase unfolds.
