Everything you need to know about Silent Hill F’s combat system, including how to perfect dodge, use counterattacks, and more.

The Silent Hill games have never focused heavily on combat, and that stays true for Silent Hill F as well. For the most part, story and characters are the main focus of Silent Hill F, with gameplay and combat serving as merely progression devices. That said, the game does have some nuance to its combat system, which makes it engaging.
With a shift to an exclusively melee-focused combat system, Silent Hill F has introduced plenty of new ideas to the series’ pre-established gameplay formula. One of these new mechanics is the “perfect dodge.” Much like in action RPGs, perfect dodge in Silent Hill F allows you to negate all damage, while opening up counterattack opportunities.
However, performing a perfect dodge isn’t particularly easy. Here’s everything you need to know about Silent Hill F’s combat system and how to perform a perfect dodge.

How To Perfect Dodge Enemy Attacks in Silent Hill F?

While the combat in Silent Hill F feels incredibly clunky at the start of the game, it does gain some depth as you progress through the story. Perfect dodge is one of the crucial aspects of Silent Hill F’s combat system. You unlock this ability fairly early in the game, and it stays effective throughout the main story. With perfect dodge, you not only negate all incoming damage, but also regain Stamina.
Performing a perfect dodge replenishes all your Stamina that you might’ve spent by attacking or performing regular dodge. To perform a perfect dodge, you simply need to press the dodge button right before an enemy’s attack lands on Hinako. You can time the perfect dodge by looking for the red-colored silhouette that enemies let out before attacking.
Do note that every enemy type has a different attack animation. Furthermore, different attacks can have variable speed, which can offset a perfect dodge. Following a perfect dodge, you can immediately retaliate with a charged heavy attack. Do note that while perfect dodge helps regain Stamina, follow-up attacks will consume it.

How To Use Counterattacks in Silent Hill F?

Counterattacks are another key aspect of Silent Hill F’s combat system. Essentially, when you see an enemy charging for an attack, you can press and hold LT or L2 to focus on them. While in the focus mode, if you see the enemy letting out a red-colored haze, you can immediately press RT or R2 to perform a counterattack.
A counterattack staggers all enemies, including bosses, for a brief moment, letting you follow it with a few more attacks. However, counterattacks cannot be performed for all attacks. Only those attacks that have the red hue can be countered. Furthermore, while in the focus mode, you will constantly drain the Sanity gauge.
If you exhaust Hinako’s Sanity before an enemy attacks, you won’t be able to use the counterattack.
