Rival events were a contentious feature in Harvest Moon: Grand Bazaar, which allowed relationships between romanceable characters to grow. If you had low friendship levels with a character, you could trigger rival events, which see two romanceable characters growing closer as “rivals.”

There were four rival events in total for each “rival couple.” The four events correspond to the black, purple, blue, and yellow heart levels. The events were also time-gated, with all of them spread out over the span of four years. However, the rivals never got married to each other, and you could raise their friendship level back up and still marry them.

Does Story of Seasons Grand Bazaar Have Rival Events and Rival Marriages?

In a departure from the original, Story of Seasons Grand Bazaar does not have rival events or rival marriages. No special cutscenes play when you lower your friendship level with a romanceable character. It is a feature that may yet be introduced, as the game already has all the rival couples and their stories set up.

Story of Seasons Grand Bazaar: All Rival Couples

There are four rival couples from the 2008 original who have retained their stories and close relationships in Story of Seasons Grand Bazaar. Samir, Arata, and Kagetsu are not paired with any rivals.

Freya and Jules

Freya and Jules both travel between the town and city, spending time together and relating to one another’s situations. The city girl and the teacher have slightly contrasting personalities, which seem to fit together well. Freya is outspoken and straightforward, while Jules remains courteous with a polite and gentle manner.

Lloyd and Sophie

Sophie is the mayor’s daughter, and Lloyd is a merchant from Breezetown with a calm demeanor. Lloyd is a good friend of the mayor and often visits him and Sophie at their house. As the three frequently discuss matters of the town, Lloyd and Sophie can naturally grow closer.

Derek and June

A withdrawn girl from the city, June’s tough exterior hides a compassionate and caring personality, one which Derek seems determined to uncover. Derek himself is an upbeat waiter with a cheerful personality that is almost the opposite of June’s. He seems to show up around June whenever she is trying to avoid the townsfolk, perhaps looking for an opportunity to start a conversation.

Gabriel and Maple

The only thing Gabriel and Maple seem to have in common is their love for sweets. And sometimes, that is enough. Gabriel is an easy-going artist and sculptor, while Maple is an energetic hotel employee who doesn’t let a mistake or a hundred get to her.
