In Tales of the Shire, planting different crops in your garden is key because you can gather most of the cooking ingredients from here alone. You cannot get these items while simply exploring Bywater or completing tales. And since cooking meals for your fellow Bywater residents is tied in to your progression, we’d say you’ll want to focus quite a bit on farming.

There’s some depth to the farming system in the game, where not all crops will provide you with equal yields. Instead, you’ll have to master the star-based rating system for crops. So, in this guide, we explore how you can get better quality crops in Tales of the Shire.

You can have one-, two-, or three-star crops. The higher the star rating, the better the crop quality. However, there aren’t any fertilizers or other such items in the game that can improve your crop quality or yield. Instead, the game determines the star rating of crops only on how happy the surroundings are for them. Each crop in the game has a preference when it comes to its environment. So, they prefer being planted alongside some specific crop types and hate being paired with other crops. So, you need to arrange your garden in a way that all your crops have the environment they prefer.

When you plan a new crop, check whether it has a yellow smiley icon next to it. That indicates happiness. If you see a purple sad emoji instead, you’ll know that the plant does not like its surrounding crops. Some crops simply want a space of their own, and pairing them with any other plants in the vicinity might lead to the purple face emoji. The same principle works for flower plants also, and not just edibles.

Besides optimizing the companion crops, you also need to ensure that each crop you plant gets the necessary space to grow. At the time of planting, you will notice a ring appear on the ground. This indicates how much space that specific plant will need as it grows and flourishes. If you don’t have the necessary space at the moment, you can always head to Farmer Cotton and buy beds of different sizes and shapes.
