The prayers of the players who were praying for a unique sci-fi game have been answered in the form of The Alters. The description of the game on Steam says “ambitious sci-fi survival game,” and rightly so.

In this game, you play as Jan. You are on an inhospitable alien planet where questionable human cloning is normalized. Amidst the intricate resource harvesting, base management, and warding off rebellious versions of yourself, this planet throws Magnetic Storms at you.

Let’s discuss ways to overcome this ordeal. Spoiler alert, it would take quite some effort.

What Is a Magnetic Storm in The Alters?

The catastrophe known as Magnetic Storm spikes the effects of Radiation sickness. It will add up faster than usual if you are outside during a Magnetic Storm. The Radiation Filters in the Machinery Room will also deplete rapidly during the calamity. Hence, the Radiation Shielding of your base would require more power. Modules of the base would be eroded, and you (and your clones) should be on your toes to repair them.

On the other hand, there is a silver lining to this cloud. Working extended shifts would not affect the morale and the happiness of the clones, since survival is of the utmost priority during this time. Moreover, the resource mining rate during Magnetic Storms increases by 50%. So, if you are sufficiently prepared, you might use this apparent disaster to your advantage.

During the Storm, assign two Alters to the Base Maintenance and take charge of the Workshop. Produce as many Repair Kits and Radiation Filters as you can—you’ll need them. If the Radiation Filter fails, you’ll get five hours to make a new one. Not to mention, your base will be flooded with radiation during this time.

Beware! If you lose too many modules, you lose your base.

Other Tasks During the Storm

Obviously, you cannot run your base without food. So, cooking should not come to a halt. Get any idle Alters to the kitchen. Moreover, if the Refinery is set up and some ALX or Enriched Metals are available, get to refining them. You’ll require plenty of Metals or Organics during a Storm.

Magnetic Storms can last more than 24 hours, i.e., you must sleep at some point. Ideally, for situations like this, enable the “Crunch” setting. This way, your Alters would work 12-hour shifts during an emergency.
