In The Alters, you play as Jan Dolski, a space explorer who’s stuck on an inhospitable planet. Getting off the planet will require him to build a base, gather various resources, and avoid the radiation from the sun. In doing so, Jan and the player will need to traverse quite a large portion of the land regularly.

Doing so on foot can be time-consuming, and time itself is too valuable a resource to waste in the game. That’s why the game’s fast travel mechanics are highly useful. In this guide, we’ll explore how you can fast travel in The Alters and when the mechanic unlocks.

How To Unlock Fast Travel in The Alters

Players are introduced to the fast travelling mechanic in the game early on while completing the Organics Matter quest. During this quest, you will build your first Mining Outpost. Once the setup is complete, you can interact with a panel near it. This will immediately open up the fast travel map of the game. While there won’t be too many travel destinations at first, you will eventually unlock more fast travel points by building additional Mining Outposts and Travel Pylons.

Keep in mind that a similar fast travel terminal is inside your base. You can choose to travel to any of the unlocked points from within the base itself. And the best part is that fast traveling does not use up any resources or require the use of additional items.

While you can build Mining Outposts in predetermined spots on the map only, Travel Pylons do not have this restriction. So, at a later stage in the game, when you begin crafting Travel Pylons, you can place them anywhere on the map and use that as a fast travel spot. However, you will need to connect all such Pylons to your base using the green-colored power lines. If you don’t do this, the Travel Pylon won’t count as active, and you can’t use it as a fast travel point.

Why Is Fast Traveling Important?

The Alters has an in-game timing system. Initially, you’ll only be able to remain outside your base from 7 am to 9 pm. So, all your outside activities must be completed within this period. For every three seconds in real time, one minute passes in-game. Fast traveling can be a great way to reach distant locations without spending a huge deal of the available time on the traversal part. This essentially allows you to get more done each day.
