The Alters puts you in the shoes of Jan Dolski as he crash-lands onto an alien planet. This planet is dangerous, and Dolski forms clones of himself to increase his odds of survival. Survival is, therefore, front and center in this sci-fi story. You venture out onto the planet during the day, scavenging for resources and minerals, and come back in at night to talk to your companions and call it a day.

Each day is a grind, and since you work so hard each day, saving your progress is of the utmost importance. While you may be tempted to trust the game to save your progress for you with checkpoints, do not do so. The Alters does not have any autosave or checkpoint system in place. Instead, you have to manually save the game. This means you run the risk of losing all your progress if you don’t manage to save the game.

If you’re looking to save your progress in The Alters but don’t know how to, we’re here to help. In this guide, we shall go over how to save your game in The Alters.

As stated earlier, The Alters does not have any autosave or checkpoint system. Instead, you have to manually save your game. You save your game by making it to the end of the day and sleeping on the bed. The game then saves the progress of the day. If you fail to make it to the bed and close the game, you lose all progress.

While the saving system may seem inconvenient and bizarre, it fits the time-based survival gameplay. The game’s whole story is running on a timer, and the game urges you to rush through a day as fast as you can. If you stick to the pace the game expects you to, you’ll get a chance to save often.

Another thing you need to take note of is the “Secure Save” feature. When you save your game, you’re given a list of save files. There are a limited number of save slots, and the game quickly starts overwriting your older saves. Using the “Secure Save” feature allows you to mark one file as ‘safe.’ This prevents the file from being overwritten, keeping it safe to revisit.
