You will meet a variety of your clones in The Alters, and each of these alternate versions has had different lives because of certain branching decisions. Each of the Alters has their unique personalities, likes, and dislikes. The very first of these Alters that you’ll meet on your base is Technician Jan. And, right off the bat, you will realize that he isn’t the easiest person to get along with. However, you’ll need to establish and maintain a strong bond with him because of a few reasons.

Firstly, keeping Technician Jan happy will help prove useful when you assign him to specific duties around the base. However, perhaps more importantly, you get to learn the Assertiveness trait from him if you are able to keep him pleased and complete his specific storyline in the game. In this guide, we’ll explore what goes into unlocking Assertiveness in The Alters.

Each one of the Alters in the game will teach the original Jan Dolski one key life lesson. For Technician Jan, that lesson is Assertiveness. The journey to unlocking this particular lesson will begin during Act 1 through the quest A Place to Rest.

Building the Dormitory and Social Room

Technician Jan will ask to speak with you, and after talking to him, you will need to build the Dormitory module. Since it’s an extremely useful module in its own right, building the Dormitory is something that you should get out of the way as early as possible.

After building a Dormitory, go about your other business as usual. After some time, you will see a purple chat icon appear next to Technician Jan’s portrait in your menu. This indicates that he wants to talk to you again. Upon visiting him, he will request you to build a place for him to hang out socially. This is your sign to start building the Social Room module in your base.

Playing Beer Pong

The next part of the quest involves playing Beer Pong in the Social Room with Technician Jan. The goal is to throw balls inside several beer cups. Regardless of whether you win or lose at this game, the quest outcome won’t change. After the game ends, Technician Jan will speak with you and let you know that you don’t need to fulfil every request that others make. It’s okay for you to say no or prioritize other requests.

This ability to turn people down is the ability to assert yourself. Once the conversation ends, the Assertiveness trait unlocks, and you see how Technician Jan differed from the real Jan Dolski. The former was able to say no to his father, while the real Jan just gave in to his dad’s wishes.
