Sandfall Interactive’s Expedition 33 is right around the corner, as it’s releasing on April 24, 2025. You will embark on a journey to save humanity from the looming shadow of death cast by the Paintress.
Since the release is so close at hand, here are five things you should know before playing Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.

1. Combat in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
Expedition 33 features turn-based combat with a mix of real-time features. What this means is that during your attacks, you can increase their potency by succeeding at quick-time events. Simultaneously, you can dodge or parry at the right time during your enemy’s turn to avoid damage.
As a result of this design choice, Expedition 33 rewards the use of both strategy and skill to achieve victory. Be on your guard during enemy turns and time your attacks with precision for the best results.
2. Setting
The game takes place in a dark fantasy setting inspired by Belle Époque France. In the game, a godlike figure known as the Paintress paints a number on a monolith once a year. Consequently, everyone of that age dies and disappears.
And so, an expedition is sent out every year in an attempt to stop the Paintress. You will control the members of this expedition on their journey to the unknown lands where the Paintress resides.
3. Characters in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
As stated above, you control the members of the eponymous Expedition 33 on their quest to slay the Paintress. Among the members of this expedition are Gustave, an engineer dedicating the last year of his life to stopping the Paintress; Maelle, Gustave’s 16-year-old foster sister and the youngest member of the expedition; and Lune, the daughter of prominent researchers who strives to complete their work.
These are just three of the members of the expedition. There are other characters such as the mysterious Verso and the all-powerful Esquie, a colorful cast of characters that help breathe life into the haunting but beautiful world of Expedition 33.
