Titan Quest 2, the action RPG by Grimlore Games, has recently launched in early access for PC (via Steam and Epic Games). Step into the mythology-inspired world of Titan Quest and fight your way to stop the Goddess of Retribution, Nemesis. Similar to other action RPGs, difficulty plays a significant role in your Titan Quest 2 playthrough, offering benefits or punishing mechanics depending on your choice.

As you create your character, you will get one important setting beyond your character customization. Before finalizing the character and starting your Titan Quest, you will be presented with the Difficulty setting with three options. However, this option doesn’t affect the world or enemy levels, as it solely alters the gameplay mechanics. Here is a complete breakdown of how difficulty works in Titan Quest 2, and how you can change it later on.

How Does Difficulty Work in Titan Quest 2?

The difficulty option selected during character creation only determines your gameplay experience. It varies as follows:

  • Neophyte: Your character receives a buff that reduces incoming damage by half. Additionally, the buff also regenerates your health at a much faster rate.
  • Normal: This is the default playthrough with no buffs or penalties, offering a standard Titan Quest 2 experience as intended.
  • Hardcore: This mode offers a punishing mechanic. If your character dies, it is permanently gone. To continue, you will need to create a new character.

These difficulty options do not influence enemy scaling or world difficulty. Instead, that is managed separately via Ritual Shrines.

How To Adjust the Difficulty Level in Titan Quest 2

You can adjust the difficulty levels and reset attributes using Ritual Shrines. You can find a Ritual Shrine as you explore the northern part of Pyrgos.

Although you cannot change the difficulty if you have chosen Hardcore, it is possible to adjust the others. If you have chosen Neophyte, you can change the difficulty to Normal via the Rituals of Athena. This allows you to exit Neophyte mode and continue your playthrough on Normal difficulty.

On the other hand, the Rituals of Ares allow you to change the enemy levels by adjusting the difficulty from +1 to +5. The shrine also lets you scale enemies in previous areas to match your current level. However, these changes are not free. You need to pay gold to activate these options.
