2025 looks to be a great year for AAA games, so let’s go over the top 5 releases, including GTA 6 and Ghost of Yotei.
2025 will be an interesting year for gamers. The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X consoles are entering the prime years of their lifespan, and developers are finally creating games for the upgraded hardware. We are also seeing many AAA PC releases and console-exclusive titles.
However, in this list, we are not going to rank any re-releases, like PC port releases or remastered versions. In this article, we are going to discuss the top 5 AAA games that are going to be released in 2025 for the first time.
Top 5 AAA titles coming out this year
We don’t have a lot of AAA titles coming out this year, but we do have some of the biggest franchises, like Rockstar Games’s Grand Theft Auto series, Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding IP, and Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed game line, releasing their games in 2025. From new entries to long-awaited sequels, here are the top 5 AAA games coming out in 2025 that you can get excited about.
5. Assassin’s Creed Shadows
Assassin’s Creed Shadows is the next installment in Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed franchise. The game was developed by Ubisoft Quebec, the developers of AC Syndicate and AC Odyssey. Ubisoft initially planned to release the game on November 12, 2024, but the developers delayed it, stating that they needed more time to polish and refine some aspects of the game.
This open-world, action-adventure game is set in 16th-century Japan towards the end of the Sengoku period. Assassin’s Creed fans have been vocal about wanting an AC game set in Feudal Japan, and their prayers have finally been answered. The game will focus on the age-old struggle between the Assassin Brotherhood and the Templar Order.
In the game, we follow two protagonists, a shinobi named Naoe and a samurai named Yasuke. Both characters operate differently; Naoe suits players who prefer a stealthy and quiet approach, while Yasuke suits those who prefer direct combat over stealth. Ubisoft will release the game for PC, PlayStation, and Xbox on March 20, 2025.
4. Monster Hunter Wilds
Monster Hunter Wilds is an action RPG developed and published by Capcom. It is also the successor of the 2018 title, Monster Hunter: World. The game will be released for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X on February 18, 2025.
Just like its predecessor, Monster Hunter Wilds is a third-person action RPG where players make their customized characters and travel to the Forbidden Lands. It is a land full of monsters where the player must find an expedition party. The game has 7 biomes. These biomes are large open worlds where the player can freely explore, hunt monsters, and choose from various side quests, and tracking and fighting the monsters is the core of the gameplay.
3. Death Stranding 2: On the Beach
Death Stranding 2 is the upcoming title from Hideo Kojima’s Kojima Productions. The game is a sequel to Death Stranding (2018), considered by fans as one of the best PS4 games of all time. The developers announced the game back in December 2022 but have not confirmed a release date yet. The creator, Hideo Kojima, is famous for his ambitious and ambiguous titles, such as the Metal Gear Solid franchise.
Death Stranding 2 is looking to be more ambitious than its predecessor. Fans are eagerly waiting to see if this sequel can capture the essence of the previous game. Kojima is keeping the details of the game close to his chest, but we do have a teaser trailer for the game, and reports have said that Kojima’s assistant, Ayako Teyashima, has been teasing that a build of the game might be in testing already.
In the game, we see the main protagonist, Sam Porter Bridges, taking on different enemies and challenges in his journey to connect the world once again.
2. Ghost of Yotei
Ghost of Yotei is the next game from Sucker Punch Productions. Their previous title, Ghost of Tsushima, is beloved by the gaming community, and even though fans expected a continuation of Jin Sakai’s story from the previous game, the developers decided instead to create a new story with Ghost of Yotei. The game was announced in September 2024 and will be released in 2025. However, we do not have a confirmed release date yet.
The developers haven’t revealed much about the game, but they have confirmed that Ghost of Yotei is going to be a standalone game set in Hokkaido, Japan, in 1603. It will be 329 years after the previous game’s story.
In the game, the players will take control of a female warrior named Atsu, who is going to take up the persona of The Ghost. We also know that the game will have an underdog vengeance-focused theme. The developers have also said that the players will have more control over Atsu’s story compared to the previous protagonist, Jin Sakai.
1. Grand Theft Auto 6
Rockstar Games has finally announced the long-awaited Grand Theft Auto 6. The previous installment in the series, GTA 5, released on September 17, 2023, more than a decade ago. Rockstar has released various versions of GTA 5 in recent years, but fans have been eagerly waiting for the next title.
Grand Theft Auto is the most anticipated game of 2025, and many would consider it to be the most anticipated game of the last decade. With its incredibly crafted open world, interesting cast of characters, and engaging missions, the GTA franchise has become a household name.
The game is set in the fictional open world of Leonida, which is loosely based on Florida in the United States. This also includes Vice City, which is the setting of a previous game. In the game, the players will get to play as two characters, Lucia and her partner, who hasn’t been named yet. The developers released the first and only teaser of the game back in December 2023. And although they expect to release the game in 2025, they have not confirmed the release date yet.
Overall, with some confirmed release dates for titles and others yet to be confirmed, 2025 is setting up to be a year the gaming community is looking forward to.
