Streaming platform Twitch has a list of banned words to moderate conversations and prevent hate speech and discrimination.
Twitch allows streamers to moderate their chats and prevent harmful, derogatory, or hateful conduct on the website. The streaming platform also has guidelines and a list of banned words to moderate speech in content creators’ chats.
Using banned words can lead to warnings and suspensions from the platform. On top of Twitch’s moderation policies, streamers can suspend or permanently ban users from interacting with other viewers on specific channels.
It is important to stay updated on Twitch’s terms of service and banned words list to avoid losing access to the streaming platform. First-time offenders receive an email, while repeat offenders are removed from the platform.
List of Banned Words on Twitch
Using any kind of inappropriate language can lead to punishment for users. But three words are part of Twitch’s global banned word list:
- Simp
- Incel
- Virgin
The three words were introduced in a Twitch Town Hall stream by the platform’s Chief Operating Officer, Sara Clemens. In a conversation with Community and Creator Marketing’s Erin Wayne, Clemens said that negatively targeting a person’s sexual activity is not allowed.
The list of banned words applies not only to viewers but also to content creators on Twitch. After introducing the words, the platform clarified that the words are bannable only when used negatively. This means that context plays a crucial role in determining whether the use of a word violates the platform’s guidelines.
Twitch has an Automod feature that allows streamers to create custom lists of banned words. Sometimes streamers have rules listed on their Twitch pages, and users should abide by them to avoid bans.
Hateful Conduct Is Banned on the Platform
According to the official Twitch Safety guidelines, any behavior motivated by hatred, prejudice, or discrimination based on the following categories can lead to actions:
- Race
- Ethnicity
- Color
- Caste
- National origin
- Immigration status
- Religion
- Sex
- Gender
- Gender identity
- Sexual orientation
- Disability
- Serious medical condition
- Veteran status
Words or phrases that fall into any of the above categories can lead to bans. Any form of sexual harassment, use of hateful slurs, inciting or threatening violence, and attempts to leak personal information are also bannable offenses.
