Discover how Friendship Training works in Umamusume: Pretty Derby and how it can be improved further with upgrades.
While beginning a new career in Umamusume: Pretty Derby, players choose two Legacies and six Support Cards to assist and build their trainee. While the Support Cards provide various bonuses for training the stats they are stacked on, their true potential is hidden until Friendship Training is unlocked. This guide explores how Friendship Training—also called Rainbow Training—is accessed and improved in the game.
How To Unlock Friendship (Rainbow) Training in Umamusume: Pretty Derby?
Unlocking Friendship Training is linked to increasing Friendship Bonds. A Support Card’s bond with the trainee is indicated by the bar under their icon. Choose the stat the support card appears on during training to increase the bond.
Once Friendship Bonds reach 80% of their capacity, the bar turns orange and Friendship Training becomes available for that card. Friendship training activates randomly and a circle with glowing rainbow colors appears around the Support Card’s icon.
Since Friendship Training provides a large stat bonus to training, you should aim to unlock it for all cards as soon as possible. Ideally, all Support Cards should have Friendship Training available by the first Summer Camp or the second goal race. The exact bonus provided usually starts from around 10% for unupgraded cards and reaches a maximum of 35% after fully uncapping. Friendship Training multiplies the stat increase after other bonuses like “Training Effectiveness” and “Mood Bonus” have already been applied.

How To Improve Friendship Training
You can unlock Friendship Training sooner by increasing the “Initial Friendship Gauge” of a Support Card with upgrades. Additionally, “Friendship Bonus,” the bonus provided through Friendship Training, can also be increased by leveling up the card.
Upgrade support cards to unlock the Friendship Training bonus. Head to the “Enhance” tab from the main menu, and select “Support Cards.” Then, click on “Level-Up” and select your Support Card. While increasing its level to the maximum, scroll down to to view the upgraded values highlighted in red. Look for whether “Initial Friendship Gauge” and “Friendship Bonus” are gaining points.
If they are listed, upcapping the card and upgrading it will increase its effects further. All the non-Guts SSR cards with the highest Friendship Training bonuses after uncapping are as follows:
- Special Week (35%)
- Speed version
- Silence Suzuka (35%)
- Seiun Sky (35%)
- Mejiro McQueen (30%)
