Guts is perhaps the most misunderstood stat in Umamusume: Pretty Derby. A consensus has formed around Guts being the least important stat in the game. While training Guts is less important during a career, ignoring it completely will lead to unexpected performance losses in PvP game modes such as Team Trials and Champions Meet

Guts has several esoteric uses, including:

  • Reducing HP loss while keeping pace.
  • Determining the winner of Front Runner duels early race.
  • Improving corner performance.
  • Reducing HP loss in the last spurt.

The hidden HP (Health) stat in Umamusume: Pretty Derby is calculated based on track distance, Stamina, and running style. HP is the energy available to an Uma (horse girl) for completing the race, and the Stamina stat makes up the bulk of its value. HP drains based on multiple factors, including the runner’s speed, track conditions, and negative effects such as ‘Rushed.’

However, HP drain during the last spurt is reduced by the Guts stat. Since the late-race phase is where the most HP is consumed to reach top speed, the bonus offered by Guts becomes important.

The HP boost provided by Guts does not scale linearly, and it begins to lose value after a certain level. Here are the best Guts values for each race type to get the maximum HP benefit from the stat.

Long (3000m)380
Long (3600m)440

Every point of Guts gained up to these thresholds provides more value than training Stamina. For example, having 800 Stamina and 320 Guts will be far more valuable for a Medium race than having 900 Stamina and 220 Guts. If you are 100 points below these thresholds, training 50 points of Guts is equivalent to roughly 70 points of Stamina for HP.

After reaching these Guts stats, training Stamina has greater value. Therefore, ensure that you arrive at these Guts stat levels by the end of the career using direct training, events, and race bonuses. Doing so will allow your Uma to use her Stamina efficiently, improving her last spurt.

The value of Guts decreases in comparison to Stamina the more these thresholds are crossed. Up until 50 points over the threshold, the 50 Guts points are worth around 45 Stamina points. After that, the next 50 points in Guts will be worth roughly 35 Stamina points. So on, the value of Guts training continues to decrease beyond the optimal thresholds.
