Learn how to upgrade unique skills in Umamusume Pretty Derby to dramatically increase their effectiveness.
Each character in Umamusume Pretty Derby starts their career with a unique skill that provides a considerable advantage during races and aligns with their personality. Whether it is Daiwa Scarlet’s “Resplendent Red Ace” reflecting her thirst to be number one, or Oguri Cap’s “Triumphant Pulse” demonstrating her nerves of steel, each innate ability synergizes with their uma’s approach.
These awe-inspiring abilities can be leveled up and improved upon further when the right conditions are met during Career Mode. Furthermore, they can also be passed down through the Legacy system for your future umas to integrate into their builds.
Umamusume Pretty Derby: Unique Skill Leveling Guide
Every unique skill has a two-star and a three-star version. The three-star version is the “true” unique skill, while the two-star version is a watered-down version. Upgrade your two-star uma to three stars with Star Pieces in order to unlock the better version of her unique ability. There are two ways to upgrade your character’s unique skill.

Career Fan Milestones
While playing through Career Mode, there will be three occasions when the game checks your fan count. If the fan count is above the required threshold, the unique skill will be upgraded. Here are all the thresholds and their corresponding check timings:
- First level up: 60,000 fans in early February, 3rd (Senior) year.
- Second level up: 70,000 fans in early April, 3rd year.
- Friendship bond with Director Akikawa needs to be green, above 60%.
- Third level up: 120,000 fans in late December, 3rd year.
Both 2-star and 3-star characters can upgrade their unique skill with this method.
Star Unlock
Increasing the star level of your uma beyond three will level up her unique skill and improve her base stats. The skill can still be further leveled during the career through the previously mentioned fan milestone method.
- 3-Star Character: Level 1 unique skill
- 4-Star Character: Level 2 unique skill
- 5-Star Character: Level 3 unique skill
Reach a higher star rank through the “Enhance” menu’s “Star Unlock” section. Gain additional Star Pieces through:
- Daily Sale
- Legendary Races
- Story Events
- Statue Exchange
- Friendship Point Exchange
- Club Point Exchange
- Special Mission Rewards
- Pulling duplicate trainees in “Scout”
If you use both methods, your character’s unique skill can reach a maximum of level 6. Unique skills have a chance to be passed on as Green Sparks through Legacy. Only veteran umas at 3 stars or above can generate Green Sparks at the end of their career.
