One of the ultimate goals in Umamusume: Pretty Derby is to assemble a nigh-unbeatable team of umas (horse girls) for PvP. The game features two competitive PvP game modes: Team Trials and Champions Meet. Team Trials is the standard PvP mode with all race distances. Scoring well in the mode determines your class rank and offers monthly rewards based on it.

Champions Meet is far more competitive and all about making a winning team. For unranked PvP, players can join Room Matches to test race their veteran umas in a variety of scenarios and against friends. Regardless of which mode you seek to participate in, having a well-optimized team-building strategy is crucial to secure an advantage.

Based on the Team Trials scoring system, each team member should be using a different running style. This means, fielding two Front Runners on any of your sub-teams is suboptimal. The primary reason for employing different running styles is scoring, as each style offers multiple good positioning bonuses that can be earned throughout the race.

Having two umas using the same running style has them compete over the same good positioning bonus. Even from a mechanical standpoint, fielding multiple Pace Chasers, Late Surgers, or End Closers is disadvantageous as they will block one another. Use the strongest veteran umas you have for each distance and select different running styles for them. Assign the first position of Ace to the veteran uma most likely to win the race in each of the teams.

The team-building meta in Champions Meet is drastically different compared to Team Trials. This is because your focus for the former is to secure first place with one of your team members in the former, while scoring is more important in the latter.

The biggest team-building difference in Champions Meet is the importance of debuffer builds. Debuffers don’t do well in Team Trials because they sacrifice race-winning investments in favor of a high Wit stat and debuff (red) skills. However, the goal of Champions Meet is for only one of your three participating umas to win. Having one debuffer imposes Speed and Stamina disadvantages on the opposing players’ teams, giving the other two teammates an edge. Here are some tips for Champions Meet team building:

  • Two Front Runners: If there is only one Front Runner in a race, she will not perform as well. A Front Runner picks up more speed when she is dueling for first place with another Front Runner. Therefore, fielding two front runners is a viable strategy in Champions Meet.
  • Ensure unique skill activation: Each character’s unique skill has certain activation conditions. Ensure that those conditions will be met during the race. For example, Taiki Shuttle’s unique skill only activates when she is positioned between 3rd and 5th place, making her unfavorable as a Front Runner.
  • Debuffer Speed vs Stamina: Create debuffer builds based on the length of the Champions Meet race. Focus on debuffing Speed for Sprint and Mile races, and invest in Stamina debuffing skills in Medium and Long distance.
