The following guide explores how Aptitudes in Umamusume Pretty Derby play a role in the build you want to achieve.

Umamusume Pretty Derby has many complex systems that you’ll need to understand and master if you want to attain glory with your racer. One of these mechanics is the Aptitudes system in the game. It can greatly impact your build and the training strategies you follow for your chosen character. However, you’ll first need to familiarize yourself with the mechanic before you can hope to use it to your advantage. So, in the following guide, we’ll take a look at Aptitudes in Umamusume Pretty Derby.
Understanding Aptitudes in Umamusume Pretty Derby

The game features three types of Aptitudes: Style, Distance, and Track. Let’s understand how each of these can impact how your racer performs on the track and more.
Style
This is the most important Aptitude in the game, strategy-wise, and Style is where most Umamusume differ from each other. There are four types of Style that a racer might have:
Style Type | Description |
Late | The racer in question runs behind the pacers to conserve Stamina. However, to take the lead during the end stages, they require significant Power. |
Pace | Your racer will trail behind the leading racers for most of the event. However, they will use a quick burst of Stamina and Power to get ahead during the final leg. |
End | In this Style type, Stamina conservation is maximized. However, there’s a risk that your racer might trail considerably. Huge amounts of Power are necessary for them to take the lead from such a position. |
Front | Your racer will try to take the lead from the start. You need to have considerable amounts of Stamina to maintain the lead over the other racers throughout. |
Distance
Racing tracks have varying lengths in the game, and not all racers are suited to all types of track lengths. So, when picking your character, make sure you check what kind of distance they can cover. The game offers four options in this regard:
- Mile
- Sprint
- Long
- Medium
Racers who are comfortable running shorter sprints will run out of Stamina if they use them during longer races. However, in some cases, if you train their Stamina enough, they might be able to run and win the longer courses.

Track
Umamusume Pretty Derby has two types of tracks: Turf and Dirt. Check which of these track types your chosen Umamusume is comfortable running on. If they are comfortable on Turf, make sure you select stadiums that have Turf tracks. The character might perform poorly if you let them run on a Dirt track.
