2024 wasn’t a perfect year for gaming fans, but there are a few games that we want you to try before the year finally comes to a close.
The year 2024 didn’t have a lot of big titles for gamers to play through. Some of them always go fly by under the radar and you never get to know about them. As a gamer, I think it’s a tragic love story. Hence, a list that allows you to explore some games released this year that you may not have heard of.
Kindly note that the list contains the writer’s subjective views and experience. You may have heard of or even played some of these games. Also, the list we are about to present to you is not ranked in any way. We are not holding one game over the others, but listing the titles that came out in 2024 that we think you should try once.
The list goes as follows:
- Pacific Drive
- Lockdown Protocol
- Still Wakes the Deep
- Tales of Kenzera: Zau
- The Outlast Trials
- The Plucky Squire
- Kong: Survival Instincts
For those who want a brief introduction to these games and how they seem to work, can continue scrolling and learn more about them.
1. Pacific Drive
Ever wanted to go on a really long drive? Pacific Drive is exactly that, but with a strange twist. The players are stuck in a never-ending loop on a highway filled with various anomalies. The pathways and the surroundings keep on changing. You must keep your Station Wagon upgraded to push it past its limits. There are different dangers to encounter. So, buckle up and take in these breathtaking environments that will make any cosmic horror fan fall in love with them.
2. Lockdown Protocol
This one is just for PC players, for now, at least. Lockdown Protocol reminds me of Among Us. The former is a 3D, first-person game though. To amp up the chaos, everyone has a gun, not just the impostor. The game is still in Early Access, and you can buy it on Steam. Lockdown Protocol looks like a fun experience if you play with your friends a lot. It doesn’t follow a typical story, but the gameplay itself is fun and will make you feel like it was worth playing it in 2024.
3. Still Wakes the Deep
Coming back to cosmic horror, Still Wakes the Deep takes my breath away every time. This game is a great combination of linear gameplay and survival horror. You don’t have to do much to survive. You just need to exist and reach the end without the monster killing you. Yes. The Monster is always on your tail and you will be grossed out once you see what it looks like. It grows more impatient to engulf you as you reach the endgame, increasing the tension with each passing minute.
4. Tales of Kenzera: Zau
Just when you are fearing for metroidvania-style games going extinct, a new one releases that keeps your hopes for the genre afloat. There is something special about this genre of games and Tales of Kenzera: Zau captures it beautifully. The game takes a deep dive into a poignant story where a boy on the path to becoming a Shaman, wishes to bring back his deceased father. He must help out the God of Death himself. Things are not that easy, of course. The combat is detailed and varied for a side-scrolling game, and the story might make you emotional.
5. The Outlast Trials
Another horror treat on the list is The Outlast Trials. The series was pretty popular among fans. But after Outlast 2, some may have lost track of it. This is why The Outlast Trials may have gone unnoticed in front of your gaze. We have already included it among the best horror games of 2024 that are worth your time. Now, it’s time you finally try it out. The best part? You can play it with your friends and enjoy the co-op experience!
6. The Plucky Squire
The developer team behind The Plucky Squire came together to create a game with such brilliant level design. In my opinion, it is one of the best games of the year 2024. The reason behind it is simply because of how creative each chapter of the game feels. The story is not too deep, but just fun enough for you to enjoy. The gameplay is also relatively simple. But what they did with the available resources is what stands out. This game is worth your time before 2024 is over.
7. Kong: Survival Instinct
You may have wanted to explore and rampage through the city as King Kong in a game, but have you wondered what it would look like from a human’s perspective? The game doesn’t stress too much on Kong’s altruistic nature. He feels threatened and is tearing the city apart. Oh, and there are other monsters too. There are set pieces when you encounter each monster and have to outrun them 2D style. I think this game from 2024 is well worth your time. It also gives vibes somewhat similar to This War of Mine, but the latter is more of a survival game when compared to this one.
