Sea of Thieves lets players battle each other when they join a faction. Let’s explore this feature and learn how to join a faction.
Factions were added to Sea of Thieves with Season 8 on November 22, 2022. Season 8 introduced a new PvP battle mode known as Battle for the Sea of Thieves in the game. Players have to join either Guardians of Fortune or Servants of the Flame to participate in these PvP battles.

What Is a Faction?
Essentially, a faction is a group that allows players to take part in PvP battles. Each faction has its own related company, liar, and unlockable curse. Sea of Thieves introduced this mechanic in Season 8, and players can join any of the two factions to participate in Battle for the Sea of Thieves.
How To Join a Faction
The process of joining a faction in Sea of Thieves is very simple, just follow these steps:
- Go to your ship’s captain table.
- Turn the Hourglass of Fate.
- Select the faction you want to join.
- You can choose either the Guardians of Fortune or the Servants of the Flame.
- After joining a faction, you have to gain faction allegiance.

How To Gain Faction Allegiance?
After you join the faction, ships from the enemy faction can invade your server. You can use the War Map to select an opponent for yourself. Engage in a fierce battle with the opposing faction and sink their ship to gain allegiance. The battle takes place in Adventure Mode, meaning you can encounter an emergent encounter while fighting other factions. However, stay within the bounds of the battle arena to avoid your ship from sinking.
How To Gain Allegiance Streaks
As the name implies, when you keep winning without sinking or losing, your streak increases. You get extra allegiance and Sand of Fate as the streaks keep getting higher. Your ship will become a faction-champion after reaching a streak of 4 or higher. However, sinking a faction-champion ship rewards more allegiance and Sands of Fate, so you might become a target very easily. A champion ship has the option to battle ships larger than itself.
