Discover how purple skills in Umamusume Pretty Derby affect your trainee and how to remove or turn them into positives.

There are several skill types in Umamusume Pretty Derby, popularly identified by their color. Speed and navigation skills are orange, stamina recovery skills are blue, passive skills are green, and debuffing skills are red. There is a rarer skill type that your trainees can acquire during their career run, which is colored purple.
This article will explore the effects of purple skills, how they appear, their removal method, and potential benefits.
Umamusume Pretty Derby: Purple Skills Guide

Purple skills are the negative counterparts of other skill types. Instead of improving speed, stamina, or stats, they reduce them. Your trainee has a chance to acquire a purple skill when she fails to place during an optional race.
You can choose to run optional races during training in the “Races” tab. If your uma places 6th or below, there is a small chance that she will develop a purple skill. These are most commonly the negative versions of passive skills and impose a flat reduction on a particular stat. However, purple skills can also be negative versions of yellow and blue skills in some instances.
Most purple skills are named after their positive counterparts but have an “×” at the end instead of a circle. For example, “Right-Handed ×” reduces Speed by 40 on clockwise tracks, and “Firm Conditions ×” reduces Power by 40 if the surface is firm.
How To Remove Purple Skills
To remove any purple skills your trainee has acquired, head into the “Skills” tab from the training menu. Find the purple skill and press the “+” button next to it. Doing so will spend the displayed SP (Skill Points) and remove its negative effects.
Most purple skills will not vanish once you spend SP on them. Instead, they will turn into their positive versions, which you can learn by spending more SP. For example, spending 50 SP to remove “Firm Conditions ×” will turn it into “Firm Conditions ○,” which you can learn for 90 SP.
The SP cost to remove a purple skill is significantly lower than the SP cost of its positive version. Therefore, it is usually worth the cost to remove a purple skill whenever you can. In some cases, spending SP on purple skills allows you to learn a new skill that may not have been available to your trainee otherwise.
The small SP loss of removing the negative skill is certainly no reason to ditch a career. Instead of forfeiting, you can use the opportunity to farm for upgrade resources like Racing Shoes by entering more optional races.
