The One Piece universe created by Eiichiro Oda is filled with detailed world-building and several extraordinary abilities. Among these, Devil Fruits are a creative power system granting various capabilities to its users. However, what is Devil Fruit Awakening in One Piece?

A Devil Fruit Awakening involves using the next level of power inside a Devil Fruit while pushing the user to an advanced state. By accessing this power of the Devil Fruit, users can dramatically increase the scope and impact of existing abilities.

What Is a Devil Fruit in One Piece?

The very first power system introduced in One Piece was the mystical Devil Fruit. Each Devil Fruit contains a unique power that it bestows upon its eater. In exchange for granting these powers, the eaters of the Devil Fruits lose their ability to swim.

Despite swimming being a necessary asset to a person living the pirate life, they believe that the power gained from the Devil Fruit is a worthy exchange.

In One Piece, there are mainly three types of Devil Fruits. The Paramecia Fruit grants superhuman abilities to its user. They are the most common and allow users to alter their bodies or objects connected to them. Luffy’s Gomu Gomu no Mi is a Paramecia Fruit.

Zoan-type Fruits can transform eaters into specific animals. Mythical Zoan Fruits can change users into animals such as phoenixes, while Ancient Zoan Fruits turn them into extinct species such as dinosaurs. The Uo Uo no Mi eaten by Kaido is a Mythical Zoan Fruit that can turn him into a dragon.

Interestingly, a version of the Zoan Fruit was developed artificially by Doflamingo. Under the orders of Kaido, it was named the SMILE Fruit and had a very low success rate of giving its user animal traits.

The rarest type of Devil Fruit is the Logia Fruit. It gives eaters control over elements of nature such as fire, lightning, and ice. Blackbeard’s Yami Yami no Mi gives him power over the darkness.

Going one step further, it was also revealed that the Devil Fruits had an additional level called a Devil Fruit Awakening.

What Is a Devil Fruit Awakening in One Piece?

The Devil Fruit Awakening was first explained by Doflamingo in the Dressrosa Arc of One Piece. He informed Luffy about a new stage of power called the Devil Fruit Awakening as well as its rarity and how it would enhance the user’s abilities.

During the Wano Arc, Kaido further clarified that an awakening occurred when the Devil Fruit user’s mind and body had finally caught up to its powers. This would signify that several powers of the Devil Fruit had lied dormant till that point, and when the user was finally prepared to use them, the Devil Fruit Awakening would occur.

Hence, a Devil Fruit Awakening would significantly boost the user’s strength while giving them access to a whole new range of powers. Since they were prepared to absorb all the benefits of the Devil Fruit, the awakening would also allow them to wield its powers more precisely.

At the same time, a Devil Fruit Awakening did not just grant free powers to its users. They would have to work hard to refine their new abilities, or they would face its drawbacks.

Types of Devil Fruit Awakening

While the Devil Fruits in One Piece are the same as mentioned earlier, their awakening gave them different benefits.

1) Paramecia Awakening:

Paramecia Awakenings largely increase the range of the power that the user can utilize. They can apply their Devil Fruit powers to the environment around them, which also help them alter the properties of substances.

For instance, Doflamingo’s Ito Ito no Mi allowed him to turn all his surroundings into strings. He could control these without touching them while making them much more dangerous than the regular Devil Fruit.

2) Zoan Awakening:

Since Zoan Fruits turn users into animals, their awakening gives them greater power, endurance, and speed. Through animalistic resilience and extremely fast recovery rates, their bodies become extremely durable.

Rob Lucci was a man who faced defeat at Luffy’s hands earlier in One Piece but later awakened. As seen in the Egghead Island Arc, his awakened form greatly enhanced all his senses. This helped him in facing Luffy’s Gear Five for a period despite being overpowered eventually.

3) Logia Awakening:

Logia Awakenings have not yet been covered in One Piece, but many theories are floating about their possibilities. The most popular among these is the ability to control nature itself. Since Logia abilities let users apply elements such as ice, fire, and more, their awakenings could potentially let them change the entire climate of a specific area.

As the power of the Logia-type Devil Fruit would justify the scale of the ability, there is high potential for this theory. At the same time, Oda has frequently surprised fans, and he could also develop a new way to display the sheer power of the Logia Awakening.

The origins of this fruit were the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika, a Mythical Zoan-type Fruit allowing him to transform into the Sun God. Hence, he can be classified under both classes of awakeners.

Risks of Devil Fruit Awakening

Awakening a Devil Fruit has several benefits but an equal amount of risk threatening the user. The heightened level of training and control required to master an awakening can take a huge toll on the user’s body. Overuse can lead to constant fatigue as well as incapacitation.

Zoan Awakenings carry the risk of completely taking over the user’s body. This would grant great power at the cost of one’s sense of self. For example, the Jailers Beasts of Impel Down were very strong but had their minds consumed by the same power.

Hence, while the Devil Fruit Awakening certainly provides a considerable advantage to its user, without proper application, it can cause more harm than good.

Conclusion

With Devil Fruits, Haki, and the Devil Fruit Awakening as well, One Piece keeps displaying its ingenuity in developing new powers. The Devil Fruit Awakening adds a layer of complexity to the simple Devil Fruit while allowing users to enhance their strengths.

With many questions still unanswered about Devil Fruit Awakenings and the full extent of their powers, fans can look forward to more thrilling revelations as One Piece unfolds.
