What is the timeline that the new Sniper Elite Resistance follows? Is it canon to the events of the franchise up until now?
Sniper Elite: Resistance confuses the timeline of the franchise a little because of a few things. First and foremost, the game’s setting is completely different from what we have experienced until now. Secondly, Karl Fairburne is not the protagonist for the latest installment! But don’t worry, we shall clear up your doubts.
Whether you are new to this series or somebody who has been following Karl’s sniper adventures since the beginning, you will have no problem understanding when Sniper Elite Resistance takes place. However, since the new game hasn’t yet been released, there will be bits of information that we won’t be able to clear up for you for a while.
Sniper Elite Resistance on the Timeline
The new game in the long-running sniper series is not carrying the story any further. In fact, it is not even a “prequel” to its predecessor, Sniper Elite 5. When does it take place? Exactly parallel to the events of Sniper Elite 5!
Sniper Elite 5 came out in 2022, five years after the launch of Sniper Elite 4. As Karl Fairburne, a German-born American, our objective in the last game was to uncover details on Project Kraken. As a result, we are also tasked with taking out operatives related to the said project. This game takes place sometime in 1944, right after the events of Sniper Elite 4.
Sniper Elite Resistance, on the other hand, takes place parallel to the events of Sniper Elite 5. How can Karl be in two stories at once? Well, he isn’t. The new addition to the franchise follows Harry Hawker, Fairburne’s ally. While the latter was solving the mysteries of Kraken in Italy, his ally was completing his missions in France at the same time. This time around, we are asked to destroy another Luftwaffe Wonder Weapon and help the French Resistance.
In this sense, it is neither a prequel nor a sequel to Sniper Elite 5. However, since the first Sniper Elite (2005) took place in 1945, Resistance serves as a sort of “standalone” prequel to it. Standalone because the 2005 game followed Karl Fairburne, not his ally, and “prequel” because Sniper Elite Resistance took place in 1944.

I am not counting Sniper Elite V2 because it is a re-spin on the original game and is considered non-canon by the community for the most part. But if you are counting it, Resistance takes place before that as well.
