The world of Naruto has several powerful abilities and jutsus crafted to maximize the strength of ninjas. Among these, the Chidori is one of the most impressive and visually stunning techniques. Known for its speed, power, and destructive potential, it has impressed fans in both Naruto and Boruto. So, who created the Chidori in Naruto?

The Chidori was created by the copy ninja, Kakashi Hatake, in Naruto. He initially created this to act as a replacement for the powerful Rasengan. Let us explore the origins and purpose of the Chidori.

What Is the Chidori?

The Chidori is a large concentration of lightning chakra that envelops the hands of its users. It is a very high-level jutsu that can be classified as a technique based on Nature Transformation due to its lightning properties.

When the chakra gathers around the hands of the user, it gives a sound resembling the chirping of thousands of birds. This is how the technique derived its name since Chidori itself means ‘a thousand birds’ in traditional Japanese.

Mastering the move takes a lot of effort since it is highly precise and requires great speed to execute safely. Additionally, the Chidori is mostly useful for assassinations. Since the user charges in one specific direction rapidly, their sense of perception and eyesight need to be excellent.

Due to all these restrictions on the technique, very few people were able to use it in the series.

Who Created the Chidori and Why?

As mentioned earlier, the Chidori was created by Kakashi Hatake as an alternative to the Rasengan. To be more precise, Kakashi learned the Rasengan from his mentor, Minato Namikaze – the technique’s creator.

While he was able to manipulate the form required for the Rasengan, it consumed too much chakra. Kakashi was also not able to add his lightning nature to the chakra. To develop a more practical technique suited to his abilities, he crafted the Chidori.

How Was the Chidori Created?

As a confident ninja dedicated to completing missions, Kakashi was dissatisfied with the incompleteness of the Rasengan from a very young age. Hence, during a mission with Minato, Obito, and Rin, he finally displayed the Chidori.

To create it, he used his hand signs and gathered chakra in his hands. Unlike the Rasengan, which required concentrating chakra into a sphere, Kakashi added his lightning release to the chakra. It then took a shape similar to a blade around his arm while giving him the speed associated with its nature too. Through this, Kakashi could evade all his opponents and pierce them with the power in his hands.

After Obito died in the series, Kakashi also inherited his Sharingan. This allowed him to perceive his surroundings at greater depth to execute the move safely. Hence, while the Rasengan could be passed on to those who had enough chakra and training, the Chidori required very specific conditions to learn.

Different Variants of the Chidori

Over the course of the story, the Chidori was taught to Sasuke by Kakashi. Sasuke was able to improve upon the Chidori and create different versions of it:

1) Chidori Nagashi

Through Chidori Nagashi, Sasuke would release a stream of lightning energy from his body and release a current that could damage multiple enemies at the same time.

2) Chidori Katana

Since Sasuke wished to apply the Chidori in multiple different ways, it was inevitable for him to imbue its energy into his sword. Through the durability of the sword and the lightning of the Chidori, it would pack a bigger punch.

3) Chidori Eiso

This was a spear Chidori that extended the range of the Chidori while limiting the risk of its close-combat nature.

4) Chidori Senbon

Shaped similar to needles, Chidori Senbon were projectile attacks that could be fired at long distances. Due to their speed, they were nearly impossible to dodge.

5) Kirin

While the Chidori used spirit energy, Kirin borrowed the power of natural lightning. It would use the power of the clouds to directly attack enemies but was very strenuous on the user. This was why Sasuke did not frequently use Kirin unless it was a very powerful opponent.

6) Black Chidori

By using the power from his curse seal, Sasuke could make a darker version of the Chidori which also had the sound of flapping wings.

7) Six Paths Chidori

Combining the Six Paths power with the Chidori drastically increased its strength. The Six Paths Chidori was even able to assist Sasuke in damaging the Ten-Tailed Beast.

8) Susanoo Chidori

As the name suggests, this version uses the Chidori through Susanoo’s body. Due to this, the size and area it damages is much bigger.

9) Kagutsuchi Chidori

Sasuke added the Blaze Release attribute along with the lightning in the Chidori to create an exploding Chidori that would leave a large impact on its target. The Kagutsuchi Chidori is also considered by many fans to be the strongest version of the Chidori, excluding the large Chidori of the Susanoo.

10) Raikiri

Along with the various versions Sasuke applied, Kakashi’s original Chidori was renamed the Raikiri. This was because he used the Chidori to cut a lightning bolt in half. He was later able to combine this with Kamui and damage Kaguya during the final war.

Is Chidori Stronger Than Rasengan?

As rivals, Naruto and Sasuke used the Rasengan and Chidori respectively to face each other. This caused heavy debate among fans as to which ability was stronger.

The Rasengan did not rely on elemental manipulation and had powerful spinning chakra which would devastate everything it touched. The Chidori, on the other hand, channeled lightning through the user’s hand before piercing through enemies.

It was exceedingly difficult to prepare the Rasengan discreetly, while the Chidori’s advantage was that it could quickly attack enemies before they knew what hit them.

Hence, while the Rasengan was more destructive and versatile since it could combine elements, the Chidori had a unique speed and precision that was lacking in most other techniques in Naruto. Therefore, both techniques are equally strong in their own right, and the victor when they face off would be determined by the setting of the battle and the user’s application.

Conclusion

To conclude, the Chidori has guided us through the lives of some of the most important characters in Naruto. While learning the power, it showed us Kakashi as a child and showcased his genius. Similarly, when Sasuke learned it, it displayed his drive for greater power as well as desperation toward his goal.

The power of the Chidori convinced its users that they would be able to achieve their objectives, and it solidified its legacy in the Naruto universe.
