Capcom recently confirmed a second round of Open Beta Test (OBT) for Monster Hunter Wilds. While the announcement did come as a surprise to some Monster Hunter fans, it was also something that was expected. Capcom often releases a short demo for most of its hotly anticipated games, just weeks before the release date. Examples of that are the Monster Hunter Rise Sunbreak demo or the Chainsaw demo for Resident Evil 4 Remake. While the OBT 2 was somewhat expected, the new monster reveal alongside the same announcement was the real surprise. Alongside OBT 2’s announcement, Capcom also revealed Gypceros to be returning in the upcoming title.

For those who are unaware, Gypceros is a monster that debuted in the series with the very first title, i.e., Monster Hunter (2004). And much like any other monster, the Bird Wyvern comes with some really cool abilities and, well, gimmicks that are bound to catch some players off-guard. Here’s everything you need to know about Gypceros in Monster Hunter, its origin, abilities, and more.

Gypceros’ Origin in Monster Hunter

Gypceros first appeared in Monster Hunter (2004). Since then, the Bird Wyvern has appeared in almost every major Monster Hunter game till Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate. However, Gypceros, despite being a fan favorite among the Monster Hunter communities, didn’t make the cut in MH World and MH Rise.

Furthermore, up until MH Wilds’ first open beta playtest, its return was nothing more than a rumor. However, once the OBT was live for PC (Steam), dataminers were able to extract details within the game’s files that hinted at Gypceros. And with the recent announcement of Open Beta Test 2, Capcom has now officially confirmed the Wyvern for MH Wilds.

Classified as a Bird Wyvern, Gypceros is quite a unique monster. Much like other Bird Wyverns, i.e., Kulu-Ya-Ku, Yian Garuga, Pukei-Pukei, etc., Gypceros isn’t a particularly huge monster. However, what it lacks in terms of its size, it makes up for with its sheer strength and ingenuity.

Gypceros, much like Kulu-Ya-Ku or Tzitzi-Ya-Ku, is very smart, a trait seldom seen in Wyverns. Furthermore, in Monster Hunter Generations, Gypceros’ tough hide made it nearly immune to flinching or staggering. As such, at least in the opening hours of the game, the Bird Wyvern posed quite a threat.

Gypceros, much like Tzitzi-Ya-Ku, has a special organ on its crest that allows it to produce bright flashes of light. Standing in front of the flashing lights causes a hunter to get stunned temporarily. Furthermore, Gypceros is also capable of inflicting Poison status with its attacks.

The Bird Wyvern also has a very long retractable tail, which it can use like a whip, dealing a ton of knockback damage. Essentially, Gypceros is a mix between Pukie-Pukei and Tzitzi-Ya-Ku when it comes to its abilities. However, what sets it apart from other Bird Wyverns, or monsters in general, is its ability to feign injury or being inflicted by elemental blights.

After a certain time during battle, Gypceros can feign being injured, even if it’s not close to dying. Furthermore, it can also feign being asleep, only to get a jump on the hunter when they try to plant bombs in front of the Wyvern or charge an attack. Also, Gypceros, due to its hide, is immune to Shock Trap. As such, if you plan to capture it, you’re going to have to use a Pitfall Trap.

Monster Hunter Wilds will be releasing on February 28, 2025. However, if you want to clash your blades against Gypceros ahead of the game’s launch, you can do so via the upcoming OBT 2. The second open beta for MH Wilds is scheduled to go live on February 9, 2024, on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
