Moroccan streamer and YouTuber Ilyas El Maliki left El Jadida prison on December 30, 2024, after authorities charged him with public indecency and sentenced him to four months in prison. After the streamer petitioned the Court of Appeals, government authorities reduced his prison time to two months.

The streamer was in prison for “inciting hatred and discrimination” against Amazigh groups. The Amazigh, also known as Berbers, are a diverse group indigenous to North Africa. The group is experiencing political tensions in Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya. Maliki’s “inflammatory” comments landed him in prison and cost him MAD 5,000 ($496) in fines.

Amazigh associations who filed the lawsuit withdrew complaints, which acquitted Maliki of some charges. Maliki issued an apology to Amazigh groups after his release. He clarified that he did not intend his comments to hurt or discriminate against any group.

Who Is Ilyas El Maliki?

Ilyas El Maliki is the president of the Moroccan team in the King’s League soccer competition. Former FC Barcelona player Gerard Piqué announced Maliki’s presidency in October 2023. He is also Morocco’s biggest streamer, with over 406,000 followers on Kick. The streamer also has over 1.6 million followers on Instagram and is one of the largest Arabic streamers in the world.

Maliki is a controversial figure in the online space. In 2023, 38 feminist and human rights organizations accused him of using his streams to spread hatred, misogyny, and discrimination. The streamer admitted to the accusations and issued a public apology. He was charged MAD 2,000 ($200) by Moroccan officials and served three months in prison.

The streamer announced his return from prison on X with a video of soccer player Diego Maradona celebrating on the pitch.

Morocco Is Battling “Inappropriate Online Behavior”

Moroccan officials are cracking down on online personalities. Earlier this year, officials charged YouTuber Reda Bouzidi, aka Reda Weld El Chinwya, for public indecency and fraud. Morocco has laws in place to curb verbal abuse, public indecency, and fraud, which extend to the online space.

Authorities can fine influencers who violate laws up to MAD 200,000 ($20,000). There is no fixed structure for prison sentences, and the duration depends on the charges. For Ilyas El Maliki, his prison release is a partial reprieve, as he is reportedly still facing a legal battle from a previous indictment.
