Kunugi is a Carpenter Buddy in Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time, and the first addition to your team during the game’s main quest. You find her in the Strangeling form of an Odd Dresser while investigating a ruin with Edward. When you take her Strangeling to the Goddess Statue, Kunugi is returned to her human form.
Once rescued in Chapter 2, Kunugi becomes a part of the main story, introducing you to the Guild system and Base Camp. During the ‘Digging Up Secrets of the Past’ quest, you have to build an Islander House and gift it to her. Besides her role in the game’s story, Kunugi provides various bonuses as a buddy and has a backstory originating in one of the previous games of the franchise.
Kunugi’s Origins
Hailing from a prestigious family of War Carpenters, Kunugi presents a masculine side to the world to uphold her reputation as the “Carpenter of the Battlefield.” Raised in a high-pressure environment due to her family’s reputation, Kunugi often struggles with expectations placed upon her. However, her tough facade hides an affectionate and caring nature towards her friends and apprentices.
Kunugi was first introduced in Fantasy Life Online, a 2018 gacha game that created a wide array of characters for the franchise. In Fantasy Life Online, Kunugi takes special care of her best friend Mayna and Mayna’s father, Woodcutter Belhart, who also happens to be her father’s partner.
Because Belhart lives alone on the Mt. Snowpeak Summit, she makes the trek to its summit alone to check on him. She also accommodates every crafting request from Mayna, such as making a tiny axe for her pet squirrel. In Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time, Kunugi is industrious and upbeat, willing to help out wherever she is needed.

As a Buddy in Fantasy Life i, Kunugi plays a helpful role for those focusing on Woodcutting and Carpentry Lives. Initially, having Kunugi in your party will boost your Carpentry skill. However, you can improve the bonuses provided by Kunugi once you level up your friendship with her. To improve the friendship score, you can give her gifts and complete her requests (quests).
Gifting characters a house is another great way to work on friendship, but that’s something you will likely do for Kunugi in the main quest anyway. Once your friendship level is high enough, having Kunugi in your party will not only boost Carpentry but SP as well.
