Zoro and Sanji are powerful fighters who act as the main attacking force of the Straw Hat Pirates alongside Luffy. While they might not always see eye-to-eye, the two of them had set themselves apart through their achievements in the crew. So, what exactly does “Wings of the King of Pirates” mean?

“The Wings of the King of Pirates” symbolizes the important position held by Zoro and Sanji in One Piece and their role in helping Luffy soar to greater heights. While Luffy wasn’t yet the King of Pirates, Zoro and Sanji held crucial roles in supporting him.

How the Title “Wings of the King of Pirates” Came Into Being

The title “Wings of the King of Pirates” was first said by Nico Robin during the Wano Arc in One Piece. During a fight against Black Maria, she was standing up for her friends when her opponent was insulting them.

Additionally, when Sanji was being taunted for crying and begging for help, Robin proudly showed her faith in him while calling him “One of the Wings That Support the King of Pirates.” Through this, she implied that Zoro was the other wing. She also showed full belief in her captain, Luffy, to become the future King of Pirates.

From this point on, both Zoro and Sanji were very popularly known among the fandom as the “Wings of the King of Pirates” in One Piece. However, does this title fit the two of them?

Why the Term Is Perfect for Zoro and Sanji

While the title might certainly seem very lofty, “Wings of the King of Pirates” perfectly suits both Zoro and Sanji.

As Luffy’s two main subordinates, the swordsman and chef championed his cause more than anyone else in One Piece. By defeating powerful enemies and commanders, Zoro and Sanji often cleared a path for Luffy to confront the opponent’s leader.

As seen through the incident with Bartholomew Kuma in the Thriller Bark Arc, both Zoro and Sanji did not hesitate to share Luffy’s pain to save their captain. Their belief and loyalty towards Luffy is also inspiring while making them deserving of the title.

In addition to their dedication towards their role, there are also symbolic reasons why the term fits them. Zoro and Sanji represent the two different sides of Luffy’s personality. Zoro was the rash and ambitious side of the protagonist, wanting to jump into battle and always searching for strong opponents.

Sanji, on the other hand, was more of his kind side. Willing to show compassion even in the most dangerous of situations and accepting enemies as his allies, this balance between two clashing personalities was what allowed Luffy to be so well-liked in One Piece. Hence, it is only fitting that his commanders, who represent each of his faces, be given the role of his wings of the king of pirates.

Zoro and Sanji’s Dynamic with Luffy in One Piece

Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji respected each other’s strengths in One Piece and had a very deep bond. Going past this, however, Zoro and Sanji also had a huge amount of loyalty and admiration towards their captain.

Since their initial introduction, they were inspired by Luffy’s resolve to become the King of Pirates and his caring attitude. Due to this, they grew attached to him and did everything in their power to help him achieve his goals.

Zoro was both a follower and guide to Luffy and helped him in becoming an ideal captain for his crew. When Usopp left the crew during the Water Seven Arc and wished to return after its events, Luffy initially wanted to happily accept him. However, pointing out his disrespect towards the ship’s captain, Zoro strongly challenged this. He also advised Luffy to not let Usopp back into the group until Usopp gave a heartfelt apology. This was another way in which one of the wings of Luffy was training him to become the Future King of Pirates.

Sanji, on the other hand, was much more subservient to Luffy, apart from getting angry when he stole food. As seen in the Whole Cake Island Arc, Sanji reassured Pudding that Luffy would defeat Katakuri. He cared little that Katakuri was widely regarded as one of the strongest in One Piece at that time.

Similarly, during the Dressrosa Arc, both Zoro and Sanji fought the top officers of the Donquixote Pirates, believing that Luffy would defeat Doflamingo himself. Even if it defies logic, Zoro and Sanji’s trust in their captain is an extremely strong tie in One Piece.

Zoro and Sanji’s Relationship in One Piece

Sanji and Zoro share both a rivalry and camaraderie that came from their unique positions as Luffy’s Wings. Zoro was a believer in equality, even if it meant beating the other gender since he never differentiated. Sanji was the exact opposite and would give up his own life before raising his hand at a woman. Due to this, the two were frequently at odds and kept fighting each other.

At the same time, they were commanders of the Straw Hat Pirates, working together to achieve their crew’s goals. While the duo might not be overly friendly, they respected each other and recognized each other’s strengths. In the Wano Arc, when Sanji asked Zoro to kill him if he became merciless, it demonstrated his trust in Zoro for this heavy task. In return, Zoro said he would carry it out but also motivated Sanji to survive against the powerful enemies ahead.

Thus, their relationship is multifaceted but can be broken down to its core of mutual appreciation but a rivalry stemming from opposing personalities.

Conclusion

All characters of the Straw Hat Pirates are immensely loyal to Luffy, but Zoro and Sanji have always gone the extra mile for their captain. As admirers and followers of Luffy, they have their own way of helping their captain rise to the top and often risk their lives in doing so.

Due to their exceptional strength that comes from the strong bond they share with Luffy, they are indispensable to the future king of pirates and earned their position as his “wings.”
