Umamusume: Pretty Derby ranks the starting level of their trainee characters using a star rating. Rare (R) trainees are ranked 1-star, Super Rare (SR) 2-star, and Super Special Rare (SSR) 3-star. While starting out, it is recommended to raise 3-star trainees first to have an easier time completing the URA Finale and start building a strong PvP team

Each star level brings with it higher stats and a more powerful version of the character’s unique skill. Additionally, 3-star+ trainees stand out for their signature race wear, while 1 and 2-star umas run in their Tracen Academy uniform. These differences often leave 1-star umas neglected until players have gathered enough Star Pieces to level them up. However, training these 1-star umas like Haru Urara and King Halo is important for building your F2P account.

Legacy Sparks and Affinity

When starting a new career, you can choose two Legacies (parents) for a trainee to receive Sparks of Inspiration from. The trainee will inherit randomized Sparks from both Legacies and Sub-Legacies at the start of the career and on two other occasions during it. The degree to which they can benefit from these sparks depends on the affinity between the characters.

Once your trainee completes the career, she can generate her own Sparks for stats, track type, track distance, and running style aptitude. Although only 3-star trainees and above can generate Sparks for their unique skills, 1- and 2-star umas have the potential to create all other Sparks equally well.

Completing careers with 1- and 2-star trainees will create a diverse pool of aptitude Sparks and affinities to use while raising your finest umas for competitive play. While you can borrow one Legacy from a friend, having your own selection of Sparks will expand your options for specializing a trainee.

For example, there are very few umas with Dirt and Sprint aptitudes, making it difficult to form a team for these categories. Haru Urara has an “A” rank in both Dirt and Sprint, making it likely that you’ll receive a Spark for them after completing her career. The veteran Haru Urara can then be used as a Legacy to raise the Dirt track aptitude of trainees you are raising for the Dirt racing category in PvP.

Missions and Materials

There are several missions and resource-gathering opportunities you have to skip while raising the best umas. Alongside creating a varied Legacy pool, training one-star umas gives you the flexibility to branch out and look to complete special missions and gather resources.

Raising the Potential level of characters requires their variety of racing shoes and winner sashes. You can earn these by competing in the appropriate events during the career. Since you won’t be looking to create a PvP veteran uma while raising 1-star trainees, you can freely participate in races during the second and third years of their careers to gather upgrade materials.
