X is experiencing a severe network outage that began on Thursday, May 22, 2025. So far, it has continued and is affecting millions of users globally. According to publicly available information, this is likely due to a data center outage or a fire at a facility in Oregon.

A fire broke out at X’s leased data center in Hillsboro, Oregon, on Thursday (May 22, 2025) morning, around 10:21 AM local time. Following this, millions of users reported login failures, were unable to DM, experienced delayed notifications, and even their premium status went offline. Downdetector tracked nearly 6,000 reports at its peak, though the results eventually clocked higher. The fire was contained, thanks to Oregon firefighters; no injuries or casualties were reported. 

X’s engineering team confirmed that a data center failure caused the outage and said they are working around the clock to fix it. The outage hit hardest in the US, Canada, Peru, and Germany.

Over in India, it saw a milder effect, as some users could still access basic features, but the majority encountered the infamous “something went wrong, please try again” dialogue box.  Even as engineers worked hard to restore service, login issues and notification problems were still apparent on Saturday, May 24, 2025.

Going Forward

The outage marks at least the third significant disruption for X in the past year. It is pretty concerning how unreliable the platform can be, but the reason was quite unfortunate. Since Elon Musk’s takeover, X has faced repeated technical issues with new business practices and staff reductions. 

As of Saturday evening, some users report that X is returning online, but most still experience bugs, slowdowns, and the try again dialogue. The company has yet to provide a detailed explanation or an ETA for full recovery, as users are waiting for updates and more platform stability.
