Electronic Arts’s Dragon Age: The Veilguard was released recently on October 31, 2024. Developed by BioWare, the action RPG is performing well and receiving positive responses. It was released as the sequel to the previous Dragon Age franchise game ‘Dragon Age: Inquisition’, which was released 10 years ago.

The single-player RPG captures the hearts of many fans with its captivating storytelling and the characters depth. The game takes place in the world of Thedas and focuses on the journey of the protagonist, Rook, who gathers forces to stop the gods. If you are captivated by the wholeness of Dragon Age: The Veilguard, then these 10 games are a must-try for you.

1) God of War Ragnarök

Starting the list with the Santa Monica Studio’s God of War Ragnarök, one of the best action RPGs ever made. It was said that The Veilguard is heavily inspired by the modern God of War games. It reflects in The Veilguard’s combat style, showcasing similar camera angles along with the combo attacks.

Both RPGs are set in fictional worlds, where God of War Ragnarök has several inspirations from Norse mythology and The Veilguard takes place in a completely out-and-out fictional world of Thedas. Similar to The Veilguard, Ragnarök provides more choices for weapon customization along with the skill tree, which allows the players to choose their preferred gameplay style.

2) Dragon’s Dogma 2

Dragon Age: The Veilguard is frequently compared with another biggest RPG of 2024, Dragon’s Dogma 2. Developed by Capcom, Dragon’s Dogma 2 takes place in an open world, unlike the semi-open world setup of The Veilguard. But they both share various similarities, such as creating and customizing their protagonists, “Rook” and “Arisen.”

Both games explore a fictional world filled with various monsters. You don’t have to fight them alone, you can take out the various enemies around the world with your party. Dragon’s Dogma 2 also has romance options like The Veilguard, but here it is a little tricker by using the affinity mechanics. Your choices have an impact on the Dragon’s Dogma 2 gameplay, similar to The Veilguard.

3) Skyrim

Next up is the winner of more than 200 Game of the Year Awards – Skyrim, the fifth main installment in The Elder Scrolls series. Although released 13 years ago, Bethesda Game Studios did a brilliant job and gave us a masterpiece in the modern open-world RPG genre. If you like the concept of hunting some dragons in The Veilguard, then Skyrim also satisfies you in that aspect.

Skyrim revolves around the plot of Dragonborn and his journey through the world of Skyrim to hunt the dragon Alduin the World-Eater. You can hunt dragons and can also use their essence to increase your level. Your various actions towards the NPC have a different impact on your gameplay, similar to The Veilguard.

4) Elden Ring

How do we not include FromSoftware’s Elden Ring in the list, and there is no need to introduce Elden Ring to RPG fans. It proves to be one of the greatest RPGs of the current generation. Written by George R. R. Martin, the fantasy RPG takes place in the fictional world of the Lands Between, which is home to various dangerous demons and monsters.

Elden Ring’s combat is said to be one of the hardest as it requires the players to create perfect builds for various types of enemies, master the timing of the attacks, and avoid becoming an Elden Lord.

Unlike The Veilguard, you can also play multiplayer with other players through co-op invasions, invited duels, or other battle options. If you like fantasy RPGs like The Veilguard, then Elden Ring is a must-try.

5) The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

If you are into The Veilguard’s narration style of storytelling along with the romance in the fantasy world set-up, then you need to meet the Geralt of Rivia. As one of the best RPGs, CD Projekt’s The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt provides a similar experience to you. With an expansive and stunning open world, you can hunt down various monsters as Geralt of Rivia, a trained monster slayer.

The good and evil choices you make will have consequences for your storyline. Similar to The Veilguard, you can choose your love interest from various options. With next-generation upgrades, they brought us stunning features such as enhanced and highly detailed visual and technical improvements.

6) Mass Effect Legendary Edition

If you loved the aspects of The Veilguard, such as choosing from various classes, party setup with the companions, and choosing the dialogue options to alter the storyline along with the romance, then BioWare’s other hit, Mass Effect, should be your next stop. The Mass Effect games provide all those features.

You can create and customize your protagonist at the starting screen, similar to The Veilguard. The Mass Effect Legendary Edition released in 2021 contains all three games such as Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, and Mass Effect 3 games along with every DLC.

7) Cyberpunk 2077

Making various choices that shape the storyline and the bond with your characters is one of the key aspects of The Veilguard. If you want to try those aspects in a different world setup, then Cyberpunk 2077 is your destination.

This first-person sci-fi RPG game takes place in the cyberpunk metropolis of Night City, where your decisions matter. With the protagonist V, you can develop your relationship with various characters throughout the gameplay. Although it faced negative criticism and bug issues at the launch, the game is now perfectly updated and optimized to provide an enhanced and rich open-world experience with a stunning gameplay mechanism.

8) Baldur’s Gate 3

Let’s head to our next choice, Larian Studios’s Baldur’s Gate 3, one of the best games of last year and one of the best RPGs ever. Set in the universe of Dungeons & Dragons, it became the first game to receive the GOTY award from the 5 major game awards such as the Golden Joystick Awards, The Game Awards, the D.I.C.E. Awards, the Game Developers Choice Awards, and the British Academy Games Awards.

Developed by Larian Studios, Baldur’s Gate 3 follows a turn-based combat system, unlike the previous games of the franchise. Similar to The Veilguard, you can choose your race and class and fight your enemies with your party members with your suitable playstyle.

9) Divinity Original Sin 2

Next, we have another Larian Studios RPG, Divinity Original Sin 2. Similar to Baldur’s Gate 3, it follows a turn-based combat system where you can fight alongside other characters. Baldur’s Gate 3 shares several similarities with the Veilguard.

It takes place in the medieval fantasy world of Rivellon, where you need to fight various monsters. It also emphasizes the character development progression by interacting with various NPC, where your choices affect the story and the world, similar to the Veilguard. You can also create a custom character by customizing and shaping their stats, race, gender, and background.

10) Dragon Age: Inquisition

Finally, we have the prequel of the Dragon Age: The Veilguard. No matter what games you play, they rarely match the experience of the original, right? That’s why, we present the closest title to the original. Released in 2014, Dragon Age: Inquisition takes place in the same world and follows almost the same mechanics.

But the only major difference is the open-word aspect of Inquisition, where The Veilguard takes place in a semi-open world setup. Playing Dragon Age: Inquisition along with the Trespasser DLC feeds you more details about the Dragon Age lore. You need to be careful with your choices in Inquisition, as it affects your bond with other characters, which may also cause you to lose your romantic relationship.
