Horror is a beloved genre in the medium of storytelling. From gaming to movies, it is one of the most respected and used genres. In recent years, we have seen numerous horror indie games that are super respectful to the genre and have captured the hearts of gamers.

If you’re looking for some of the best indie horror games, we have you covered. This list combines the best of them that you can play right now.

1) Five Nights at Freddy’s

An indie game horror list will always be incomplete without Five Nights at Freddy’s. Developed as the last straw by Scott Cawthon to save himself from financial crisis, the game became an instant hit among YouTubers. Not only did it help Scott, but the game actually allowed many YouTubers like Markiplier to gain the base of the following they have today.

The plotline is simple: You’re a bodyguard who’s on a night guard, but you have to keep yourself safe from the animatronics that roam around the pizzeria at night. However, the story’s rabbit hole is deeper than you can expect, allowing the game to span 9 mainline games. Additionally, the sequel to its movie adaptation is also in the works.

The impact that FNAF had on the gaming industry speaks volumes, and to this day, 100s of developers draw inspiration from it. Definitely the golden egg of horror games that sprouted a huge number of careers.

2) Signalis

An isometric indie project that keeps the player on the edge of their seat, Signalis is a perfectionist of a horror game. Set in the far future where humanity has conquered numerous planets beyond their solar system, you control Elster. She’s a humanoid bot who wakes up from a nightmare and decides to track down the love of her life.

Signalis follows the Dead Space-esque environmental setting, but the stakes are higher than you could ever expect. The field of view is minimal, and the shooting mechanics are clunky and rusty, which gives them a unique yet fun aspect. Everything you find and see can hurt you, and most importantly, the items to help yourself, like ammo or medkits, are minimal in quantity.

A pure adrenaline rush horror indie game that will put you in a chokehold if you become familiar with its elements. Signalis is a must-play.

3) Mouthwashing

Mouthwashing is a super-immersive psychological horror indie game that takes a deep dive into the human mind. It feels more like a Stanley Kubrick film, which is completely unhinged from bottom to top, leaving you in distress in every single moment. The game follows a crew that is tasked to ship a few containers through space, but due to some severe circumstances, the ship wrecks.

The game constantly reminds us of how corrupted a human mind is, and what it can do in the lowest moments. Still, you and your crew carry on while knowing their inevitable demise. The cast is perfectly balanced, with all of them having their own character arcs and demons to fight. However, it doesn’t take long before everything takes a dark turn.

All in all, Mouthwashing is a masterpiece of an indie horror game that constantly reminds you to take responsibility for your actions. If you don’t, well, let’s just say, your actions will catch up.

4) Outlast

The cult-classic indie horror that set a new horror standard for the industry, Outlast, shook the gaming scene back in 2013. Garnering massive attention through YouTubers, it successfully implemented and innovated the helpless survival-horror genre.

To this day, Outlast remains the face of horror indie games that can shake you down to the core.

5) Iron Lung

An indie horror adventure in a blood ocean of a moon, Iron Lung executes the stranded horror element quite too perfectly. Your objective? Explore the blood ocean to discover what’s hiding in the deep.

Gaining both critical and fan acclaim, Iron Lung encapsulated the essence of existential horror, leaving everyone stunned. Additionally, it has a movie adaptation releasing soon, in production by none other than the beloved YouTuber Markiplier.
