Canadian rapper Drake has filed a federal lawsuit against Universal Music Group (UMG). In the lawsuit, he allegedly mentioned that the label essentially allowed various content creators to freely stream and react to Kendrick Lamar’s Not Like Us. For those unaware, Lamar and Drake had been embroiled in a diss war in 2024. Not Like Us ended up going viral among netizens and was reacted to by various streamers, including Kai Cenat, Zias, NoLifeShaq, RDC Gaming, and others.
The song included some serious allegations and verbal jabs, including labeling Drake a “p*dophile.” The rapper has answered back with a lawsuit, claiming that the track made false allegations and endangered his life for corporate gain. Universal Music Group (UMG) also owns or has shares in Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE), the label that represented Kendrick Lamar.
Twitch streamer Kai Cenat’s reaction to Not Like Us was among the most viral in the content creation scene. His reaction on YouTube is still up and has over 9 million views. RDC Gaming also made content around the beef between the two rappers. Drake has highlighted that these were done without them receiving any copyright claims, meaning that these reactions spread online unshackled. One portion from the lawsuit reads:
“UMG took the unprecedented step—contrary to its internal practices—to remove the Recording’s copyright restrictions on YouTube and Twitch, thereby “whitelisting” the Recording to ensure content creators would republish it broadly.”
Is Kai Cenat on Good Terms With Drake?
Twitch streamer Kai Cenat ranks among the biggest names in content creation today. He has naturally crossed paths with major figures in the rap scene, including Drake.
When Drake released his diss track Family Matters, he texted Kai Cenat, urging him to “stay on stream” (a text Kai shared while streaming on Twitch). The streamer later listened to Drake’s track, but moments afterward, Kendrick dropped another diss titled Meet the Grahams.
Although Cenat is mentioned in the lawsuit, neither his stream nor the other creators involved face any direct repercussions. It’s likely that Drake does not hold them accountable, as his lawsuit primarily targets UMG. As of now, Kai Cenat has not reacted to the news.
Drake maintains a close relationship with the streaming community. Over the past few months, he has collaborated on streams with popular creators like Felix “xQc” and Adin Ross. Drake occasionally broadcasts gambling streams sponsored by Stake.com.
For those wondering about UMG’s response, the company has released a statement denying the allegations made by Drake. Furthermore, they criticized him, accusing the rapper of attempting to weaponize legal proceedings in an effort to stifle other artists’ creativity. They wrote:
“He now seeks to weaponize the legal process to silence an artist’s creative expression and to seek damages from UMG for distributing that artist’s music. We have not and do not engage in defamation — against any individual.”
