Every weapon, armor, and even some tools can be enhanced with magical enchantments in Minecraft. Enchanting is usually done by placing an item with lapis lazuli on an enchanting table surrounded by bookshelves. The bookshelves increase the levels of enchantment available while a few pieces of lapis lazuli are consumed. However, once you’ve enchanted an item, you cannot place it on the enchanting table again to add additional enchantments. The best way to do that is with enchanted books and an anvil.

You can enchant books the same way as any other item, by placing them on an enchanting table with lapis lazuli. To enchant a book, you first need to craft one using three pieces of paper and one leather. You can collect sugarcane grown by water bodies to make paper by stacking three pieces horizontally on the crafting table. Next, place three pieces of paper with one piece of leather to make a book.

Place the book in the enchanting table surrounded by bookshelves to see the enchantments available. To unlock the third enchantment listed—which can range between enchantment levels 30-50—you need to have 30 levels of XP. However, the enchantment will only consume 3 levels of XP, the same as the number of lapis lazuli required. Hover over the three options to see the enchantment being added by each one.

Choose an enchantment you want for a weapon or tool. If you don’t like the options, enchanting any item at level 1 will reroll the enchantments you can have on your book.

Once you have gotten the enchantment you need, place the enchanted book on an anvil with the weapon or tool you want to enhance. It will cost a few levels of XP, and you will combine the enchanted book with the item to transfer its enchantment over to it.

The best part is that you can repeat the process to get as many enchantments on a particular item as possible. When playing in Survival mode, players should do this with precious items such as a diamond sword. You can add a high-level sharpness enchantment and combine it with a durability enchantment book to ensure you get the most out of it. The process is very XP-intensive and may require a lot of fighting or mining before you can create an item with multiple enchantments. You can also combine enchanted books.
