What’s better than a Doom Slayer completely decimating demons of various shapes and sizes? A giant mechanical Slayer destroying huge villains like its mere fodder. The Atlan suit is essentially a giant mechanical exoskeleton that the Slayer (or King Novik) can control in Doom The Dark Ages. As a part of the main story of the game, you will need to don this suit and complete several missions.

Combat with the Atlan is significantly different than the Slayer’s normal repertoire. Weapons take a back seat, and melee becomes your primary mode of damage for the most part. Moreover, Atlan combat is heavily focused on perfect dodges, as it empowers you greatly. In this guide, we will explain how combat works with the Atlan in Doom The Dark Ages.

As mentioned earlier, the Atlan’s combat is mostly melee-focused in Doom The Dark Ages. This mechanized suit has 1000 health, and it automatically restores health with each enemy that you defeat. There are weapons (only two to be specific) that you can use, but they will be handed to you in specific scenarios only. The basic mechanic of the Atlan’s combat relies on melee attacks to build up charge for a finisher, and then execute them in a glory kill-ish manner.

You do not have access to the shield saw in this mode, and perfect dodges are heavily rewarded. That said, even normal dodges are important since you will lose all of your charge if a single enemy attack hits you. With a weapon, your combat almost entirely becomes a cycle of “dodge and spam.” Keep reading to find out the detailed analysis and combat guide for the Atlan in Doom The Dark Ages.

Here are the key aspects of the Atlan’s melee mode in Doom The Dark Ages:

  • Combo Punch: Pressing your primary fire will cause the Atlan to throw punches with alternate hands. Landing attacks will also increase your Finisher Meter.
  • Finisher Meter: This increases as you keep hitting enemies with your Combo Punch. There are two levels – one at a semi-circle and one at a full-circle. Essentially, these indicate the power level of your Finisher. Pressing alternate-fire when it is charged executes the Finishers. If an enemy attack hits you, then all Finisher Charge is lost.
  • Finisher Moves: Pressing alternate-fire when the Finisher Meter is charged executes the Finisher Moves. There are two finisher moves based on the Finisher Meter:
    • Stomp Finisher: If you use your Finisher at the half-circle charge, it will execute a kick called the Stomp Finisher Attack.
    • Palm Strike Finisher: Using the Finisher at full charge executes a Palm Strike Finisher, a single-handed strike which closely resembles a Qi Blast.
  • Rocket Punch: Pressing Alternate Fire when there is no charge executes a Rocket Punch. It will move you quickly in the direction that you are facing, and can also be used to break debris that is blocking your path.
  • Dash/Dodge: Pressing the right button (Spacebar on PC) will cause the Atlan to dash or dodge. If you execute a Perfect Dodge, time is slowed down for a very brief moment.
  • Sprint: The Atlan can sprint normally like the Slayer.

During the final battle, you will also be able to use King Novik’s Royal Atlan in Doom The Dark Ages. The mechanics remain the same, however, the finishers are replaced by a twin-canon plasma shot instead.

When using a weapon, the Atlan changes to a ranged-fighter in Doom The Dark Ages, and here is everything you need to know about it:

  • Weapon Fire: Simply hold your primary fire button to unleash a flurry of bullets on the enemy. There is no ammunition limit here, so feel free to spam away.
  • Perfect Dodge: Perfect Dodges supercharge your weapon, which makes the barrel glow red and greatly increases its firepower. Both the rate of fire and damage per shot increases when it is supercharged. There is a small bar on your screen which denotes how long the supercharged mode will last.
  • Sprint: You can sprint normally like the Slayer.
  • Melee Attacks: You cannot use any of the melee attacks or finishers while using a weapon with the Atlan in Doom The Dark Ages.

Throughout the game, you will be able to use two kinds of weapons on the Slayer’s Atlan. One of these will be a double-barrel minigun, and the other one will be a shotgun. Both of these have massive damage outputs and makes short works of the massive demons. However, while using King Novik’s Royal Atlan, you will also be able to use a different weapon instead.

Although the Atlan’s combat is very straightforward, here are some tricks and tips that might help you stay ahead of the enemy in Doom The Dark Ages:

  • Start the fight with a Rocket Punch, since you do not have any Finisher Charge.
  • Keep throwing melee attacks till you build up at least half of the Finisher Meter.
  • If there are multiple enemies around, focus on using the Stomp Finisher rather than building both charges.
  • With singular or spread-out enemies, build your Palm Strike Finisher, and use it on a new demon to completely destroy it in a single attack.
  • Dodge all incoming attacks. If you are hit by one, all of your Finisher Meter will deplete, along with you taking some damage.
  • When using weapons, try to stay in the Supercharged state for as long as possible.
  • Do not worry about health of the Atlan, as it automatically heals upon defeating an enemy.
  • However, if your health is too low, you can use the Rocket Punch to reposition yourself by creating some distance.
