In this guide, we’ll explain how and when you can unlock the ability to cut BT umbilical cords in Death Stranding 2.

In the first Death Stranding, you could cut the umbilical cords of BTs and send them back to the other dimension with the help of your cuffs. However, in Death Stranding 2, you don’t have access to your cuffs anymore. But does that mean you cannot perform this specific move to defeat the BTs any longer? The game does offer a similar mechanic here, although it obviously doesn’t involve the cuffs anymore.
In the following guide, we explore how you can cut BT umbilical cords in Death Stranding 2 and when you unlock this special ability.
When Does the Ability To Cut BT Umbilical Cords in Death Stranding 2 Unlock?

Since Sam doesn’t have his cuffs anymore and must rely on the Ring Terminal, many of the abilities that he had in the first game won’t be available to him from the start of the second title. But that doesn’t mean you can never perform the maneuver again. Instead, you will need to unlock a special weapon to resume cutting the umbilical cords of the Beached Things.
After arriving in Australia and progressing through the game far enough to complete Order Number 16, you will unlock the weapon needed for this ability, named Blood Boomerang. During this particular order, Sam will have to deliver some cargo from the West Fort Knot location to the Northern Environmental Observatory.
As soon as you drop off the goods at the destination, the Blood Boomerang weapon will unlock automatically. With this weapon, you can then send back the BTs to their dimension by cutting off their umbilical cords.
Keep in mind that the Blood Boomerang is primarily a throwable weapon loaded with Sam’s blood. However, you can also use it up close to sever the BTs’ ties to this world.

How To Cut BT Umbilical Cords in Death Stranding 2

With the Blood Boomerang in your possession, you can now start severing the umbilical cords of BTs. To do that, simply approach a BT stealthily, which means moving slowly and holding your breath. You have to get as close as possible to the umbilical cord trailing behind a BT. Once you reach close enough, there will be a prompt on the screen to cut the umbilical cord. Simply press circle on your controller to perform the action and kill off the BT.
Cutting the umbilical cord not only clears your way of BTs, but some of the enemies might also drop a Like or two in the process. In some cases, you might get some Chiral Crystals for freeing the BTs.
