Dead Rails has come a long way, and with several new trains now in rotation, it’s the perfect time to look at how each one stacks up. Whether you’re new to the game or trying to decide where to invest your bonds, this guide ranks every train in the game, from the basic default model to the overpowered Ghost Train.

S Tier Trains

Wooden Train

The Wooden Train easily takes a top spot in the current meta. It’s fast, roughly 10 km/h faster than most other trains, and features incredibly quick acceleration and braking. What sets it apart even more is its completely open view, which some players might see as a downside due to the lack of protection, but for others, that visibility is a major advantage.

Combined with the Conductor class, the Wooden Train can reach speeds up to 100 km/h, letting you cover more ground in less time. Its only drawback is the cost, sitting at 285 bonds, which can be a steep investment for newer players. Still, the performance more than justifies the price.

Ghost Train

The Ghost Train is another powerhouse and one of the most useful trains for players who struggle with clearing out towns. When you stop and kill a couple of zombies, the rest of the nearby enemies start fighting each other, turning the chaos in your favor. It’s not just a flashy cosmetic; it offers real in-game value by reducing enemy pressure. Though it isn’t something beginners can afford early on, it’s an incredible tool for solo play or late-game grinding.

A Tier Trains

Passenger Train

If your playstyle leans toward defensive setups and creative builds, the Passenger Train is worth considering. It offers better protection than most other trains thanks to its internal seating and structure, which can actually trap or delay enemies like zombies and werewolves. It’s especially handy for players who like to stay inside their train during fights or while exploring towns. While the train is on the slower side, it’s a solid option for those who value safety and interior space over speed.

B Tier Trains

Cattle Car

The Cattle Car doesn’t get a lot of attention, but it’s not bad by any means. It offers decent cover and works well as a general-purpose train. It lacks standout features, which keeps it from ranking higher, but it also doesn’t suffer from any major weaknesses. If you’re looking for a stable mid-tier option, this one will get the job done.

C Tier Trains

Armored Train

The Armored Train is one of the more divisive picks in Dead Rails. Some players love it for its protective layout and built-in turrets, while others find it too bulky and slow. It burns through fuel faster than most trains and doesn’t offer much mobility, which can be a dealbreaker for those who value speed. It does have one entrance, which can help with defense, but unless you’re building a bunker-style setup, it’s probably not worth the trade-offs.

D Tier Trains

Default Train

The Default Train does what it needs to—it works. It’s free, reliable, and always available. However, compared to every other option, it lacks any kind of advantage. There’s nothing to complain about, but also nothing to celebrate. It’s a beginner’s train and should be swapped out as soon as possible.

Golden Train

Despite the name, the Golden Train is all flash and no function. It doesn’t glow at night and offers no improvements over the Default Train beyond its color during the day. It’s basically a cosmetic purchase for players who want to flex, but in terms of performance, it’s one of the weakest options in the game.

The Wooden Train and Ghost Train stand out for their performance and unique mechanics, while the Golden Train and Default Train sit at the bottom with limited utility. Choose based on your playstyle, speed, protection, or creativity, and you’ll have a smoother ride through the Dead Rails wasteland.
