Weight management is a major part of what you do in Death Stranding 2, much like the previous game. Sam has to carry extremely heavy cargo and equipment across vast stretches of open land, often through uneven terrain. In such circumstances, you can’t afford to carry even a single gram of extra weight, or Sam might take a tumble and cause the cargo to undertake damage.

While going through the inventory looking for any extra items to discard, you might find some with the ‘Used’ marking on them. While your first instinct might be to ditch these used items, we’re here to tell you there’s a better use for them. In this guide, we’ll take a look at how you can recycle used items in Death Stranding 2.

You can recycle items at any of the bases or facilities in the game. All you need to do is access the terminal in such facilities and open up the Private Locker Management option. From here, select any of the red-marked Used items in your inventory and flag them for the ‘Recycle and Store’ option.

As soon as you recycle any piece of equipment, you will receive materials and other resources that are invaluable in crafting gear moving forward. Depending on what kinds of items you recycle, you can get the following materials out of it.

  • Ceramics
  • Metals
  • Resins
  • Chiral Crystals
  • Special Alloys
  • Chemicals

All of the materials listed above have a maximum value that you can carry at any point in time. So, if you’re at max capacity for a specific resource, we’d suggest storing your used items for recycling later when you’ve depleted the stock of that specific resource. Keep in mind that you can recycle not only the items marked as Used but also any of your other possessions. However, since there are usually better ways to utilize such items, recycling them might not always be the best option.

How Else Can You Discard Used Items?

Apart from recycling, you only have one other option to get rid of your used items, which is to simply drop them. When you’re in the middle of a mission and you can’t simply head to a base for inventory management, the only option is to throw your used item away. Even then, it’s better to only discard a few of the used items in your possession to free up enough space for any emergency items that you’ll need to carry.
