Chamber of Strategy requires you to complete a chess-like puzzle in Baldur’s Gate 3. Here’s how to solve the puzzle in multiple ways.

The Chamber of Strategy is one of the many puzzles in Wyrmway that you must complete as part of the Wyrmway quest. This puzzle requires your party to solve an ongoing Lanceboard problem, a type of chess that was common in the Forgotten Realms. There are two methods to solve this puzzle and proceed to the next room.
This guide explains both ways to complete the Chamber of Strategy in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Normal Way to Pass the Chamber of Strategy in Baldur’s Gate 3

This method is the traditional approach, requiring you to move the pieces on the board to their correct positions. Before attempting this, make sure Gale is in your party. Gale is proficient in Lanceboard and can provide hints for the solution.
Three possible variations of the puzzle can appear in the Chamber of Strategy in Baldur’s Gate 3. Each variation has its own method of solving it. Here are all three:
- First Method: Move your White Rook one square right to check the Black King. The opponent can respond in two ways —
- Black Bishop takes the White Rook. Then, move your White Queen three squares to the right to checkmate your opponent.
- Black King retreats to avoid the check. You can checkmate him by moving your White Knight one square up and two to the left.
- Second Method: Move your White Queen to the upper right corner of the board. After your opponent’s turn, move your White Queen four squares to the left to deliver checkmate.
- Third Method: Move your White Queen straight ahead and capture the Black Pawn, which will also check the Black King. Once it retreats, move the Black Pawn one square up and left to deliver the checkmate.
Gale gives hints about which methods to use, so listen carefully during the puzzle.
Alternate Way to Pass the Chamber of Strategy in Baldur’s Gate 3
The alternate way requires some ability to deal lightning damage to enemies. If you inspect the Black King piece, you’ll see that it’s invulnerable to everything except lightning and has 50 HP. You can kill the piece with any party member, which completes the puzzle since your goal is to defeat the Black King by any means.
Once you finish, you can move on to the other chambers and continue progressing in the Wyrmway quest.
