The Old Man quest in Abyss Miner is one of the key challenges players encounter on Layer 2. Completing it unlocks the Chasm Smasher, a powerful Heavy Pickaxe that ranks among the best tools in the game.

To reach the Old Man, you need the right gear, careful navigation through the Magma Cave, and the ability to collect rare Magma Cores under harsh conditions.

Old Man Quest in Abyss Miner

To begin the Old Man quest in Abyss Miner, you must first reach Layer 2 and meet Bellua, the quest-giver NPC also known as the Old Man. He’s hidden deep within the Magma Cave, and getting to him is no simple task. Before heading out, make sure you’re fully equipped or you’ll be forced to backtrack.

Required Tools and Equipment

Before you descend, gather the following items:

Moon Whistle Rank: You cannot interact with the Old Man without this rank.
Xplr. Glove: Essential for climbing, as the quest involves vertical movement and stamina usage.
Leather Boots: Prevents fall damage during initial descents.
$24,000 Cash: Needed to buy Hardened Steel Boots once inside the Magma Cave.
Hardened Steel Boots: Protects you from heat damage inside the lava zones. These are mandatory.
Rope Gripper: Helps with climbing tight paths and vertical segments.
Best Pickaxe or Drill: You’ll need efficient tools to mine Magma Cores.

Without these, you won’t be able to complete the route or survive inside the lava-filled areas.

How To Reach the Old Man

Once equipped, follow this path to find Bellua:

Go down the rope from the Surface to Green Haven.
Head to Dzack’s Shop in Rooting Ruins.
Use the rope inside Dzack’s Shop to descend to Arcus Silva.
From the landing point, head left toward the waterfall, then continue straight to reach Altumhill.
Enter the Magma Cave and purchase the Hardened Steel Boots from the shop inside.
Exit the shop, turn right, and follow the narrow path until you reach an area with a tree in the middle.
Climb the wall across from the tree and enter the small passage.
Continue climbing until you reach the magma waterfalls.
Near the flowing magma and scattered rocks, climb the wall again and take a right.

You’ll eventually reach a secluded training spot where the Old Man stands. Interact with him to start the quest.

Quest Objective

Bellua will task you with collecting:

10 Normal Magma Cores
5 Unstable Magma Cores

You can mine the Normal Magma Cores from the rocks near the magma waterfalls where you just climbed. For the Unstable Magma Cores, go deeper into the Magma Cave, following the magma lake. Equip your Hardened Steel Boots at this point or you’ll take heavy damage and die quickly.

Eventually, you’ll find a rope leading down into a dark chamber. This area holds the rocks that contain the Unstable Magma Cores. Mine carefully and don’t linger too long if your gear isn’t strong enough.

Returning To the Old Man

Once you collect all 15 Magma Cores, return to Bellua in his hideout. After you hand over the materials, he’ll reward you with the Chasm Smasher, a Heavy Pickaxe that deals extremely high damage per second.

It’s not the fastest tool, but it hits hard and is only outclassed by the Black Steel Shovel, which costs a massive $250,000. Since the Chasm Smasher is a quest-only reward, this is the only way to obtain it in the game.
