With the final release of Hades 2 recently launching, here’s a brief character sketch of who its protagonist, Melinoe is.

Set as a direct sequel, Hades 2’s protagonist, Melinoe, takes on the spotlight in her journey to save her family against the Titans. She is portrayed as someone with a tendency to undermine herself, while being a child of divine beings. Her journey from start to finish fleshes out her insecurities and molds her slowly. Here’s what we know about Melinoe.
Who Is Melinoe in Hades 2?

Melinoe is the child of Hades and Persephone, and the younger sibling of Zagreus. Hades 2 takes place after the first game, and much has passed. Chronos, the Titan of Time, has imprisoned her family. Since she was an infant, Melinoe has been nurtured under Hecate, a proficient witch. Similarly, Melinoe is also a witch and Hades 2 sets this as a gameplay element. She has to manage her Mana as well in the game.
Her visuals are similar to Zagreus’s, with both of their eyes colored differently. However, a striking feature is her ethereal left arm, lost during a ritual with Icarus. Also, Melinoe becomes a fresh new face as her colors resemble her father, while Zagreus fully basks in red, possibly contrasting their approaches in combat.
Melinoe uses magic attacks, spells and traps, while Zagreus was more often than not just charged at obstacles.
Melinoe From the Greek Mythology
Melinoe’s place in Greek Mythology has many overlaps, from her birth, a result of Zeus’ mischief, to her visual representation. She has been portrayed as half black and half white, signifying her birth upon the river Cocytus, as a being between life and death. However, it could also be her Cthonic and Olympian heritage that represents the duality of her physical self. Melinoe is referenced mostly in the Orphic Hymns, like much of the Greek Mythology, and her existence is based on cross-references in theory, as not much is known about her.
Hades 2 emphasizes her background as a child of Hades and Persephone, as well as her resolve to finish off Chronos. She has never met her parents or siblings, but her fate has been tutored into her since birth. To eliminate Chronos and possibly find her family, if they are still alive.
Her purpose is also hinted at in Hades 2, as she fights for people she has never met in her life. However, being the child of Hades and Persephone, she still retains the stubborn personality of her father and the devious and underworld-ly personality of her mother.
Even Hecate, her mentor, has been tied in a close manner in the game. It is theorized that Melinoe is an aspect of Hecate, the goddess of Witchcraft and Night.
