Melinoe will have to face many bosses as she reaches to the far depths of Tartarus and defeat Chronos once and for all in Hades 2. Before she can head to a new area, you will have to defeat the final boss in order to move ahead. The very first final boss that you will encounter is none other than Melinoe’s mentor, Headmistress Hecate. In order to proceed to Oceanus, Melinoe must defeat her teacher to prove that she is ready for the depths underneath.

Headmistress Hecate is not a particularly difficult fight in Hades 2. However, the first time that you encounter her, you are likely going to die. Moreover, Hecate does not reveal all of her moveset in the first run, and they mostly vary in each of them. With the right set of skills, focusing particularly in ranged combat, Melinoe can easily overcome this challenge. In this boss guide, we will explain how you can easily defeat Headmistress Hecate in Hades 2.

Headmistress Hecate is found in the last room of the Erebus region in the Tartarus (underworld) route of Hades 2. No matter which path you take throughout your run, the final room of Erebus will lead to Headmistress Hecate. This room’s entrance will also be marked by the red boss icon, and you will also be able to see an icon of Cinder, the boss’s material drop.

The first time you encounter her, she will appear strict, almost like a doting guardian refusing to let an inexperienced child into the wild. As you keep defeating her over and over again, Hecate’s demeanor will change and she will even praise your fighting prowess later on.

Headmistress Hecate’s Moveset In Hades 2

Headmistress Hecate has quite a few moves up her sleeve, although she will not use all of them. Depending on your run, she will only use some of them each time. Broadly, her attacks can be categorized into three types:

Compulsory Moves

Headmistress Hecate's Crossed Flame attack is the most common one in Hades 2.

These are the moves that Hecate will always perform, no matter the run. She uses them all throughout the fight.

  • Crossed Flames: A flaming circle will spawn with Hecate as the center, and it will keep moving radially outwards. After going a bit, the circle will move back inward and vanish. Both the expansion and contraction can deal damage.
  • Twin Flames: Hecate will use her weapons to fire two flames towards you. Both flames will move slightly diagonally from her, leaving the center free.
  • Single Flame Arc: Hecate brandishes her weapon to produce a single crescent flame arc that moves forward.
  • Wraith Summon: Headmistress Hecate forms a barrier around her and summons wraiths that will constantly throw small fireballs towards Melinoe.
  • Multiple Flame Arcs: Hecate uses this attack towards the end of the fight, where she will throw multiple smaller arcs towards Melinoe’s direction. These will move forward for a while and then return back to Hecate. Both the outward and inward movement can deal a lot of damage.

Mirror Image Moves

Hecate often creates two mirror images of herself, after which there will be three of her in the battlefield. These position themselves like a triangle, at any three sides of the arena. Only one of these is the real one and takes damage. These are the moves that she uses when she is using the mirror images:

  • Mirror Image Umbral Fireballs: All the mirror images throw a continuous barrage of Umbral Fireballs. These are fired in Melinoe’s direction, but they do not seek her.
  • Mirror Image Flame Strikes: All the three Hecates fire two crescent arcs. All three Hecates will aim this attack at you, and it is very fast.
  • Mirror Image Crossed Flames: The same Crossed Flames attack, but all three of them do it. There is usually a small spot at the center of all three Hecates that you can use to avoid, or you can move to a corner that is out of there reach.

Hex

Once you have brought Headmistress Hecate to around 30% of her health, she will form a barrier around her and use Hex. During this phase, she uses two moves that are constant everytime, and also then uses one of three moves each run:

Constant Hex Moves

Hecate will use only two compulsory Hex moves:

  • Curse: Throws a curse hex that chases you. If it hits, Melinoe is transformed into a sheep for a short duration.
  • Wraith Summon: Same as before.

Choice Hex Moves

Headmistress Hecate will use any one of these moves after she summons wraiths:

  • Lunar Ray: Three beams of Lunar Ray will come out from Hecate like a laser beam. They will rotate like a fan, and if you are hit, you take damage.
  • Fireballs: Hecate will throw smaller fireballs at your direction.
  • Ground Hex: Small circles of Magick will form on the ground, which have a visual timer. If you do not move out of this circle while it is recharging, you will take damage. The circles keep forming in any direction that Melinoe moves.

  • Once the fight commences, try to get two or three hits right off the bat. Hecate will immediately use her Crossed Flame attack.

  • You can try to outrun the curse Hex, and it will despawn after chasing Melinoe for a while. However, this is very difficult. Even the slightest error will make it hit you.
